Anything GPU accelerated freezes

Post by TheJooomes »

I'm using the live USB media for all my testing.

I've tried 20.1 Cinnamon - Freezes in ~30 seconds
20.1 MATE - Freezes while loading the desktop
19.2 MATE - Is fine, then freezes almost immediately when I enable hardware compositing. Forcing Firefox to use hardware acceleration makes Firefox itself freeze, but the rest of the desktop is fine.

I got this PC for free because it would have otherwise been recycled.

Removing the Radeon card and using the iGPU results in no freezes, but very poor performance and lack of full hardware acceleration. This PC came with a dead GT 710 so I put a known good Radeon R5 240 in. I know this card works properly because I was using it a few months ago on a testing PC, and a friend of mine used to daily drive it and use it for light gaming on Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1 with no issues.

I'm currently running a Memory test that's taking forever to complete, so I might as well post this and wait for replies while I wait. Currently no errors.

Specs:
Dell Optiplex 360 MT
Core 2 Quad Q6700
2Gb DDR2 800Mhz
Radeon R5 240

1st guess == When you're using a live booted environment the correct gpu drivers for that R5 240 video card are not install or possibly not included with the default kernel of whatever distros you experience this problem with.

Have you just tried installing LM 20.1 cinnamon or 20.1 Mate to see if the problem remains?

2nd. If problem remains, try upgrading the kernel to 5.8 as that has been known to resolve many varieties of problems including gpu acceleration issues

Regardless...please paste the results of inxi -Fxxxrz from your own terminal command window by 1st left clicking on that </> button ( 5th one from the left above the message window and will show ), ensure the cursor blinking it between those two [codes] then highlight everything in that terminal window below the actual command and paste the result into that it. Here's mine.

I don't recall at the moment the oldest AMD gpus/video cards in which the correct or good drivers are built into the kernel and starting exactly when/which kernel.

I just installed 19.2 MATE to the HDD. It's gonna be a while before I can test kernel 5.8 because of all the upgrading I'll need to do.

Just out of curiosity I tried an HD6450 from the spare parts bin. It seems to run perfectly stable. I would still like to try getting the 240 to work because it's significantly faster and I would need to fabricate a new bracket for the 6450 if I were to use it full time.

Edit: I will try upgrading to 20.1 before testing kernel 5.8, it's just going to take a while.

I've upgraded to 20.1 and installed kernel 5.8..0-50-generic and I'm still having the freezing issue with hardware acceleration on the 240.

Have a look through the GPU section of this forum:

viewforum.php?f=59

As your issue does seem to be specific to your GPU etc.
Laptop overheating? Check link here:itsfoss guide . Also a move from Cinnamon to XFCE can give a -5 to -10 degrees C change on overheating hardware.

It's a pretty old card, I'd be looking at fan / dust in heatsink issues in the card too. Failing that, perhaps the POO removed the fan/heatsink and did not apply sink grease?
