Why is update manager offering lower kernel version update for Cinnamon Edge?

Post by FanOfLinux »

Hi All:

I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon Edge wth kernel 5.8

Code: Select all

$ uname -r
5.8.0-50-generic
When I clicked on Update Manger, I get a 5.4 kernel update
suggestion like so:
Screenshot from 2021-05-10 22-50-59.png
Why?

Caveat: From forum, I learned I should not use LM Cinnamon 20.1.
Hence I installed LM Cinnamon Edge
I have an ASUS ROG Zephyrus AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS and NVidia RTX 2060
Existing ISO is Win10 on one NVMe and LM Cinnamon Edge 20.1 on the other NVMe.

BTW, I use Ubuntu Mainline to install 5.12 and it failed.
So I removed it.
But now there are some strange behaviour.
How do I reinstall the same 5.8 kernel for LM Cinnamon Edge?

The 5.4 series is LTS
The 5.8 series is cutting edge and often updated.
It's good to have a mainline kernel in reserve in the event the latest
is not the greatest for your system.
Grub will by defaut boot to the highest rev kernel installed.
I keep one of each series as they are proven
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

If you have both kernel series installed, it will offer updates for both. If you are booting into 5.8 then there is no problem.

I am having problem booting another Mint from as USB drive.
This has never happen to me before!
Maybe it is due to this new laptop hardware!
In a dual boot of Win 10 and Linux Mint, how do you remove the dual boot
and revert to single boot of Win 10?

If I can do hat, may be I should be able to boot Mint from a USB again like I did before
In any case, it would be good if we can revert back to Win 10 single boot!
