I have a problem setting up my linux mint dual boot how i want.
I want this boot to happen such that if i have the extern ssd (1tb) inserted it will boot to linux (which is installed on said ssd). However if i dont have the ssd inserted, it should boot to windows (installed on internal drives).
I suspect this is more related to my bios, which is what came with my HP pavillion laptop. Any help with this would be appreciated. My current problem is that i dont even know what keywords to put into my search. So even helping me get keywords would be really helpful.
I heard running an inxi command was helpful. So here the output is:
CPU: Dual Core Intel Core i5-6200U (-MT MCP-)
speed/min/max: 500/400/2800 MHz Kernel: 5.4.0-58-generic x86_64 Up: 21m
Mem: 1341.5/7800.8 MiB (17.2%) Storage: 1.14 TiB (1.4% used) Procs: 202
Shell: bash 5.0.17 inxi: 3.0.38
I will keep googling away while waiting for responses.

Re: Dual boot extern SSD setup
Are you booting in legacy or UEFI mode (have a look in BIOS)? Easier to set up dual boot on two drives in legacy, slightly more complicated with UEFI.

Hi,
I'll be posting my writeup on creating a bootable external drive shortly.
I think that it might be of interest to you. You can easily modify an existing drive to support this method.
I'll post the link here when it's ready.

Re: Dual boot extern SSD setup
I got some more help yesterday from a programming discord server. Im booting from UEFI, but i just tried with legacy today. However legacy still loaded with the UEFI GNU GRUN version 2.04 that i had problems with yesterday. Also im slightly concerned that legacy might be worse for security than UEFI and i heard there might be problems booting into windows at all from legacy.
Re: Dual boot extern SSD setup
I can't think of any security issues, legacy vs UEFI.
Whatever mode win is installed in, you want to install win in the same mode, if UEFI then install mint in UEFI mode, if legacy then install mint in legacy.
This might help you
