Welcome to the forums.

You don't give much information.
Can you read through the following link and especially follow number 5.
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444
Was this a new installation or not?
Do you have Timeshift snapshots?
Was this from an upgrade or an update or just randomly decided not to boot?
Don't just focus on those questions but give us all the details as none of us are by your computer at the moment (or at least if they are they might be hiding under your bed - just take a quick peek to put your mind at rest)

Thanks for welcoming me.
First I could not boot because timeshift took all the space on the partition, so I increased the space of the partition to fix the problem. Then I could boot properly.
And then when I was trying to delete timeshift backups the screen froze and I had to force my laptop to restart by pressing the on/off button.
After that, the grub2 menu appeared and I used a live CD to fix the boot. Now when I start the laptop, I have a message saying : GNU GRUB version 2.04
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

I'm using Linux mint 64bits, cinnamon
Thanks

Re: Boot issue

Ok - that explains alot.

Timeshift should point to a different partition and ideally a different disk as disks will fail occassionally - so its better to have that redundancy.
Unfortunately Timeshift doesn't notify people of the possibility of the problem that you experienced. Apart from that it is an indispensible piece of software.

Can you run us through how you tried to delete the files - any commands/key presses etc.
Did you do it by command line?
Was the hard drive deleting the files when you reset the computer ?
What exactly froze - as in was the hard drive light busy?

I did not use command line, I just right clic and delete the files. I don't know if the hard drive was deleting it when I reset the computer. While deleting the files, the Asus screen appeared as if the operating system failed and it wanted to restart but then the keyboard and the launchpad did not respond, that's why I reset.

Now all I can see when I try to start is :
GNU GRUB version 2.04
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

Try booting into Live Mint.
Run Timeshift and see if there is a restore point available. If there are a few, then delete a couple - just to give you some space on your drive.
Then, restore to a snapshot.
As soon as you are able to boot into your system, go into Gparted, make or find an EXT4 partition (preferably on a different drive from your system drive) that has 100GB (enough for 12 or more snapshots depending on your system) Timeshift and change your Restore point schedule and where the snapshots are saved.
It is unlikely that you managed to delete any snapshots without doing it as sudo so hopefully you'll be ok. Did you try deleting them within Timeshift or did you try and take your chances in your file manager?

Let us know where you get to before there is a problem.

You may have to run a system check in Gparted if there is a more persistent problem - lets just see how the above goes first.
I trust you have backups of your important data.
If not then the first thing you do when you boot into Live Mint is to mount the system drive and backup your important data to at least one and preferably 2 or 3 external drives (yes, I am a bit OCD about backups but that is better than not being OCD about backups) that you dismount, disconnect and put them in a vault somewhere in the arctic circle as soon as that is done.

Timeshift can't find any snapshot, which is strange because I tried to delete only 2 out of 3 backups. I tried to delete it on the file manager.
There are some data I would like to backup, but I can't access it. It says : sorry, but you cannot execute commands from a remote site. This is disabled due to security considerations."

I think in trying to delete snapshots you have deleted more than you should have, there are clues in the boot-repair output.

Code: Select all

chroot: failed to run command '/usr/sbin/grub-install': No such file or directory
couldn't find the file

Code: Select all

OS#1: unknown Linux distribution on sda3
it knows there is an OS on sda3, but can't work out which one.

Code: Select all

sda3 : not-sepboot, no-kernel, part-has-no-fstab, not-sep-usr, with--usr, part-has-no-fstab, std-grub.d, sda
It can't find fstab, part-has-no-fstab, fundamental to booting linux.

I think you have borked the system beyond repair and your only alternative is a re-install.

Keep using timeshift - it works, you aren't the first to have borked your system, we all have, some of us several times :D It has saved me on several occasions, just make sure you point it at an ext4 partition that is not your / partition.
