I have an old HP HP Elite x2 1012 G1 tablet running windows with a Intel Core M3-6Y30 CPU, 4 GBytes of Ram, Samsung 128 GByte Solid State Drive and a new battery. It is also equipped with the stock HP Pen and rather good Bang and Olufsen sound system. It is currently running Windows 10 Pro and I mostly use it as a Kindle E-reader, Browsing the web (Google Chrome) and sometime On-line Gmail. I also occasional run No-Machine to manipulate remote Linux machines. It works fine for all except now it keeps complaining that I need to upgrade Windows 10 and replace explorer with edge ..... every damned time I turn it on and when it has been running for an hour or so a notification pops-up with similar complaints. On previous versions of Windows I would just disable updates and continue on.
If I have to upgrade the OS then I will target Linux Mint 20.1 with the Mate interface. I plan to fully charge the battery, attach a key board to one USB port and boot from a live USB stick in the other USB port. Target apps will be:
1) Google Chrome Web Browser
2) Kindle for Linux
3) Pinta
4) NoMachine Client
5) Reader for Acrobat
6) LibreOffice
7) VLC
So here is my Question(s):
1) Has anyone tried this on a HP X2 Tablet?
2) Any hints or suggestions ?
3) Am I about brick this thing and send it back to HP to recycle as planned obsolete scrap.
(HP provides no support for anything other than Microshit Windows 10)
M3-6Y30 == Intel® CoreTM M3-6Y30 with Intel HD Graphics 515, (0.9 GHz, up to 1.5 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology**, 4 MB cache, 2 cores)

Re: Upgrade tablet from Windows to Linux Mint 20.1
I would see if you can boot Live Mint on it at all.
If you can't then that would be that.
If you can, then it might be worth researching further?

Getting the Bios Boot to recognize a USB keyboard seems to be problematic (works fine after the OS is loaded).
I ordered a used HP Elite x2 1012 G1 Travel Keyboard keyboard that plugs into a proprietary connector in the bottom of the tablet.
I hope that I am not throwing good money down a bad hole.

Re: (Solved ... sorta of) Upgrade tablet from Windows to Linux Mint 20.1
OK this is resolved .... sort of.
I first tried booting from the Linux Mint Live CD and installing Linux mint along side Windows 10.
That failed.
Then a spent several hours trying to Repair the Windows 10 installation.
That failed.
So I decided, "Screw it. There is not data on this tablet. I am going to do a complete re-install. Might was well start with Linux."
All went well (Having the proprietary HP keyboard helped a lot).
So it is up and running and everything works.
One very NASTY Problem: I keep getting alerts saying the battery is low, but I will start another thread for that.

Re: (Solved) Upgrade tablet from Windows to Linux Mint 20.1
t is NOT the laptop Battery that is low ...
it is the tiny "AAAA" battery in the HP/Watcom pen
SOLVED ... or will be when I can get a new "AAAA" battery.
