Mint Installer won't recognize second HDD but Ubuntu will

Post by jafo »

I am trying to install a triple boot system on my new HP 17-CN0008CA laptop, Windows 10, Ubuntu 21.04, and Mint Cinnamon 20.10. I have this same triple boot setup working on my MSI Apache Pro and an older HP G71. Win 10 is installed on the 256GB SSD, Ubuntu is installed on the second 1TB HDD with no problems. However, the Linux Mint installer is not recognizing that second HDD. I can load the live session from USB and run the installer, but there is no option to install to second HDD. I cannot see it in Nemo file manager or GParted. Strange thing is, it is detected and visible to GParted from the Ubuntu installer USB and Ubuntu installed with no problems to the Ext4 partition on the 1TB HDD.

-BIOS Mode UEFI
-256GB SSD Controller type NVMe, Controller interface PCIe, Status NON-RAID, running Win10
-1TB HDD Controller type AHCI, Controller interface SATA, Status NON-RAID, running UBUNTU 21.04
-The 1TB HDD has 3 partitions, one 700GB NTFS, and two 118GB Ext4 partitions.
-Secure boot and fast start are disabled.
-I Used a Mint Cinnamon 20.10 installation USB, verified and used for previous installations.
-Tried a completely different USB installer with Mint Cinnamon 20.04

Not sure what to try next, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi jafo ,
welcome to our forum.
:)

can you use the Disks program, in the LinuxMint Live Media,
and then copy an screen_shot from that program, of both HDDs
back here, on your reply.

Also try mounting those partitions with Disks (select partition and click on triangle icon downside) and see if you receive any warning or error.

Is Fast start-up in Windows disabled?

Post back following codes result

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
sudo fdisk -l
sudo blkid

Hi Pierre,

Thanks for the welcome and your interest in this problem. Here are the screenshots you requested.

First is from Disks in Live session of Linux Mint. You can see the 1TB HDD is not even listed (not recognized).
Screenshot from LinuxMint Live 2021-06-12.png
Second is from Disks in Live session of Ubuntu 21.04. The 1TB HDD is listed (the Ubuntu installer can see it).
Screenshot from Ubuntu Live 2021-06-12.png
Is this perhaps a problem with the Mint installer not recognizing very new hardware?

Hi Jopeta,

Here are the results to your suggestions.

I can't mount the partitions due to the Mint installer in Live Session not being able to see the 1TB HDD.

Yes Fast-Start in Win10 is disabled, as well as Secure Boot in BIOS UEFI settings.

Here are the code results you requested.

Re: Mint Installer won't recognize second HDD but Ubuntu will

Post by bwestoz »

I had several days of bafflement with Mint Installer not seeing a drive in spite of no probs installing windows, Q4OS, using gparted from mint live.

That's my post linked above.

Turns out I had to run this command:

dmraid -r -E /dev/sda

It asked me if I wanted to remove sil from /dev/sda and I chose Y. Then the installer worked.

Poor Sil - never knew him.

It seems that somewhere it it's history the drive had some kind of RAID configuration although that's a bit of a mystery to me given what I know about where the drive came from.

Anyway it fixed it for me and I sure tried a whole lot of other things suggested in various posts, none of which worked.

Might be worth a try.

good luck

Maybe is a SATA mode problem (in UEFI settings if it is set to RAID not AHCI for that disk) as bwestoz said or just a very new hardware/firmware as Pierre is suggesting (Ubuntu 21.04>kernel 5.11, but LM 20.1>kernel 5.4 does not match very well as per inxi). Did you try cinnamon edge edition (kernel 5. 8 )?

PD: Sorry, i misunderstood you can see HD only with Ubuntu 21.04.

Hi ricardogroetaers,

The Mint Cinnamon installer USB that I tried first was the same USB that I used for a clean install on my old HP G71 that worked just fine. At first I thought maybe the installer was corrupt so I downloaded Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit) again and created a new installer on a different USB stick. Still had the same problem.

Hi JOPETA,

Yesterday, I tried Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) as per your suggestion, and still had the same problem. According to my UEFI settings 1TB HDD Controller type AHCI, Controller interface SATA, Status NON-RAID.

Hi Pierre,

The version number of Disks:
Ubuntu 21.04 installer
gnome-disk-utility 4.0.0
UDisks 2.9.2 (built against 2.9.2)

Mint 20.10 installer
gnome-disk-utility 3.36.1
UDisks 2.8.4 (built against 2.8.4)

Hi bwestoz,

As per your suggestion I tried:
mint@mint:~$ sudo dmraid -r -E /dev/sda1
and got the following error:
no raid disks and with names: "/dev/sda1"
It was worth a try.

At this point I'm convinced enough to believe this is a hardware/firmware problem. The Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit) installer can't deal with the new hardware. I was eventually going to upgrade the 1TB HDD to a well established MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD. I will be doing that sooner than expected and I'm sure that will resolve this problem. Although, it would be advantageous to resolve this problem for others with no intentions of upgrading. Future releases of Mint will most likely address this issue. Any other suggestions are welcome, as I will keep trying to get this issue resolved before the upgrade. Thanks.

Hello,
Perhaps you should try an LMDE4 live session and install up to a point.
Kernel is antediluvian (4.19) but installer is not the same (at least with Mint 19.3) and the manual installation is done by Gparted.
If Gparted allows you to install LMDE4 by creating the partitions the way you want them to be for your Mint favorite flavor, you could perhaps use these partitions to reinstall over LMDE4.

I think sda1 refers to the first partition on the drive not the drive itself. I think the drive would be sda, sdb etc.

What I suggested was

dmraid -r -E /dev/sda

not

dmraid -r -E /dev/sda1

although I don't know what the drive on you PC is - might be sdb etc

Hi Aztaroth,

I tried the lmde-4-cinnamon-64bit installer. It wouldn't even load. Just a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of black screen.
I then tried in compatibility mode, same thing. Downloaded again and used a different USB stick, same thing.
So in the end I wasn't able to boot a live session of LMDE4 to try your suggestion.

Hi bwestoz,

This is what I got:

jafo@jafo-HP-Laptop-17-cn0xxx:~$ sudo dmraid -r -E /dev/sda
[sudo] password for jafo:
no raid disks and with names: "/dev/sda"

Looking at the drives recognized by GParted in the Mint live session this is what the installer can see.
Screenshot from 2021-06-13 22-21-34.png
The 1TB HDD Isn't listed.
/dev/nvme0n1 is the 256GB SSD where windows 10 is installed
/dev/sda is the 32GB USB stick with Mint installer
/dev/sdb is my 4TB seagate backup drive

The Mint installer doesn't even know the 1TB HDD even exists.

Thanks for giving a try to my suggestion. Sorry it couldn't help.
I hope Mint 20.2, which release is imminent according to the official blog (mid June), will help solving your problem with a new kernel even if Clem was a little evasive on the subject at the beginning of the month :

When can we expect the 5.11 kernel from Ubuntu 21.04 for Linux Mint 20.X?

Will you please create an edge ISO with the kernel 5.11 again !?

We’ll update the EDGE ISO but it doesn’t need to follow the release of 20.2 (I mean it doesn’t need to happen at the same time).
By the way, did you try the actual EDGE ISO, which presentation on the official blog https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... /edge.html begins with :
If you cannot boot or install Linux Mint because your hardware is too recent and is not properly detected look for an “Edge” ISO image.
Of course, a download link follows after the list of upgrades (here, kernel 5.8 is used instead of 5.4)

the main issue seems to be that the Ubuntu installer,
has an more recent version, than the similar LinuxMint installer is using.

thus, it may require an later version of the LinuxMint system,
or to simply place the LinuxMint system onto one of the other drives.

NB: when the usb stick, with the LinuxMint installer upon it,
is Not in use .. which of the existing HDDs is now shown as sda ?

UPDATE:

I installed the new 1TB SSD today. The problem still persists. No matter what I try, the Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit) installer cannot see the second SSD. I was hopeful the upgrade would solve the problem, but it did not. I have been through the UEFI settings and cannot see any reason why this is so.

I went ahead and installed Ubuntu 21.04 with no problems.

Any further suggestions? Something I haven't tried yet? Or, just wait for the next release of Mint and hope the issue gets resolved?

Thanks for the figure.

If the figure is correct, this Linux Mint installation media is completely atypical.
There is something wrong with its creation, it is missing partitions.
Compare with my Mint 19.3 media (64-bit, of course).

Observation:
I discarded my Mint 20.1 install media as I no longer use it. It looked the same as the Mint 19.3 install media. If you wish, I can download the "iso" from Mint 20.1 and stamp it on a flash drive or memory card for you to see. It costs me nothing.

Hey ricardogroetaers,

You got me thinking about the Mint installer ISO and why they were different. So, I went ahead and used Ubuntu 21.04 ISO Image Writer to create the Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit) installer, instead of Win10. You were correct, there is a difference in the way the Partitions are written.

This is a screenshot of Disks from Ubuntu 21.04 of the Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit) installer USB that was written in Ubuntu.
made from ubuntu Screenshot from 2021-06-15 21-36-01.png

This is a screenshot of the same USB from within a live session of Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit).
mint installer Screenshot from 2021-06-16 03-43-19.png
If compared to the previous Mint installer USB written in Win10, you can see they are different.
However, it made no difference. Still cannot install Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (64-bit), as the installer cannot see the SSD.
