Boot resolution

Post by azidhaka »

Hi everyone,

On my Mint 20.1 Cinnamon system I upgraded my monitors from 1080 to 1440 and now the startup console messages and the Plymouth splash screen texts look garbled, as if their resolution remained at 1080. I am using the proprietary Nvidia driver.

What is the proper way to fix this?

Please post an inxi -Fxxxzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and on how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxzr
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers
Results
.

The results will help us to help you.

Does this mean you bought new monitors or you made a change to existing monitors?

Unless you customized something in grub or Mint before you switched to the new monitors, I am not aware of a reason Mint would "retain" anything from your prior monitors.

It is possible to take a Mint hard drive from one computer (presuming proprietary drivers were not added) and switch it to another computer and have it work. When the system boots, there is a fresh start. The system checks to see what is attached and loads the appropriate drivers.

The graphics data you posted indicates Mint is seeing the desired resolution.
Display: server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: nvidia resolution: 2560x1440~60Hz, 2560x1440~60Hz

Is the screen resolution readable when you boot into BIOS?
