Boot up issues after shut down

Post by Zalcoti »

Hi, all. Having issues with booting into Linux 19.3 MATE 64 bit. It started happening one day after not using the system for a week. I had to boot into an old kernel in order to log in and use Timeshift. What I assumed was the issue was updating to the newest kernel (5.4.0.74.83) and an Nvidia update (nvidia-graphics-drivers-460 Transitional package for nvidia-kernel-common-460). Since then the boot issues have happened again. I left the system off for a couple days for the weekend. Come Monday a similar issue came up. This time booting into any previous kernel wouldn't work. It would sit at "loading initial ramdisk". It forced me to do hard resets since I couldn't do it through any commands. I'd rather not do this to my hardware. The only thing that allowed Linux to boot was using nomodeset. I used it for the most current kernel in use. Messages show up when powering down but I'm not even sure what they say since it goes by too quickly.

The system is up and running at the moment. It's fine if I let it stay on. Turning it off causes the problem. Not sure about restarting since I don't want to go through that mess again. I'm honestly afraid to update at this point and am considering a fresh install with 20.1. I'm not even sure if I'll avoid the same issues that way, either. My personal files have been backed up as a precaution. Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

EDIT: Restart doesn't reproduce the issue. Just did it twice.

Re: Boot up issues after shut down

Post by Zalcoti »

I found a TImeshift from June 3rd that didn't have the latest grub2 update. I'm starting to suspect that might be the issue. The Nvidia update still does have an issue with coming to a black screen with an unblinking underscore so I've decided to not use it at this point. The newest kernel update? If I can somehow get the grub update fixed I might attempt the update again to see if it also caused a boot hang.

Again, this all happened while turning the computer on while it was off for a day or more. Restarting didn't cause the boot issue.
