[SOLVED] After Install Mint boots directly into windows 10 without showing GRUB Menu on ACER laptop

Post by naveenbp »

Hello All,
I have an issue immediately post install - unable to boot into Mint after install as i cannot see GRUB menu. I have installed Mint 20 on Acer laptop
I have checked that Windows is in UEFI prior to install of Mint. In addition, i have disabled secure boot & fast startup in windows prior to install.

As suggested in https://www.lifewire.com/change-the-efi ... gr-4028027 I have edited the boot order, but this did not help. Here is the output.

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0003
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 2002,0000,2001,2003
Boot0000* Windows Boot Manager
Boot0001* Unknown Device:
Boot0002* Unknown Device:
Boot0003* ATAPI CDROM: Slimtype DVD A DA8A6SH
Boot0004* ubuntu
Boot2001* EFI USB Device
Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
Boot2003* EFI Network
I changed this with

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr -o 0004,0003,2002,2001,0000
BootCurrent: 0003
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 0004,0003,2002,2001,0000
Boot0000* Windows Boot Manager
Boot0001* Unknown Device:
Boot0002* Unknown Device:
Boot0003* ATAPI CDROM: Slimtype DVD A DA8A6SH
Boot0004* ubuntu
Boot2001* EFI USB Device
Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
Boot2003* EFI Network
As this did not work, I need help.

This is output for GRUB

Code: Select all

cat /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Post by senjoz »

Some Acer notebooks need special trust settings in UEFI for boot files. See for instance https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php ... st13341757. Maybe your Aspire E5-573 needs these settings.

Re: After Install Mint boots directly into windows 10 without showing GRUB Menu

Post by naveenbp »

Hi senjoz, thanks for the reply, I tried out what you said and I got a GRUB Menu with no need to press F12 in case i need to go to windows. The menu shows it all. However, I encountered few (changes / problems) which I will enumerate below so that it helps others.
Please note my laptop is ACER E 15 [ACER E5-573-36RP]
PLEASE REFER TO PREVIOUS POST AND ALSO READ THIS BEFORE EXECUTING THIS.

1. I had disabled secure boot, now i had to enable it to do the changes as suggested & I am getting GRUB Menu with Secure boot ON

2. I could find only one HDD0, in this I could find the list <EFI>

3. When i clicked on ubuntu, I got this list (in this order):
<.>
<..>
grubx64.efi
shimx64.efi
mmx64.efi [i did not get MokManager.efi and i dont know what the first two symbols are for in this list]

4. I proceeded to rename as suggested; I added a prefix mintgrubx64efi, mintshimx64.efi and mintmmx64.efi

5. I exited and returned to boot page as suggested, here i moved these efi in the following boot priority order:
mintgrubx64efi
mintshimx64efi
mintmmx64.efi

I kept windows boot loader to the end in the boot priority order
I saved and exited [removed the admin password also as suggested]
I got an error message after restart: Signature not valid, first kernel has to be loaded

5. Then i changed this order to
mintshimx64efi
mintgrubx64efi
mintmmx64efi

Saved and exit
Voila on restart, everything was perfect - I got a GRUB menu with both choices ubuntu and windows - ubuntu at the top
This documentation is for anyone else with a similar issue on ACER laptop Aspire E15. Thanks a lot senjoz
