Logged out after Timeshift snapshot

Post by Anarki »

Hello,

Hoping I can get some help to resolve my issue. I created a Timeshift snapshot that took up all space on my drive and was unable to delete it. Now I cannot boot my laptop any more.
I know my login and password, I am simply unsure how to proceed and free up some space once logged in.

Welcome to the forum, Anarki.

If you are stuck in a login loop (you put in the correct password and it keeps coming back to the login screen), then try the advice in this post.

Or you can try some of the tips in this thread Disk full, unable to login. I need help [SOLVED] to help you clear enough space that you can get back into your system.

Once you get in, here are tips on How to Clean Linux Mint Safely.

Hi SMG,

Thank you for your help!
I ran df -h | egrep "^/dev/|Filesystem" and they were all (except one) at 100%.
I then ran sudo apt-get clean and that was able to bring me to my usual login page rather than a terminal. However I still cannot access my desktop.

I am also able to access grub but nothing shows there.
What command could I use to free up space?

Please post the results of the

Code: Select all

df -h | egrep "^/dev/|Filesystem"
so we can see where the problem currently is.

You are getting grub with no options at all?

I think so. I press Escape and then get:

GNU GRUB version 2.04

I am not familiar with that type of issue, so we'll have to wait for someone else to help with that.

You mentioned you are able to get the usual login screen. What happens when you log in?

Nothing, I type in my password, but it won’t log in and comes right back to the main screen.

What command could I use to free up space?
Boot a live system (your mint install stick), run the file manager on that and delete the contents of /timeshift on your system drive (it will be listed under the devices pane on the left in the file manager).

Once you have done that and are able to boot as normal you are going to have to sort the problem, either by:
  • pointing timeshift at another drive/partition for its snapshots, or
  • increasing the size of your / partition.
or both.
