So i just played with this, and changed 'ulyssa' to 'uma' in '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list'. The updater announced that anew version of update is available, and tons of files needed updating. I installed a 20.1 VBox, updated to the current 20.1, then changed 'ulyssa' to 'uma', and run the updates.
After the update, Linux Mint Version shows as 20.2, Cinnamon as 5.0.2, Nemo as v5.01.
Is this a fairly reliable update to the 20.2 beta? Boots fine, all features i tested worked fine?

It's beta so that you can determine its stability and report it back to the Mint team.

So, you should direct your questions there.Bugs in this release should be reported on Github at https://github.com/linuxmint/mint20.2-beta.

For your own system if you don't care to spend time on it later when something breaks down the line, fine. For trying out 20.2 I'd suggest to use the beta ISO.
I suggest strongly to wait for the 20.2 upgrade option to be opened in Update Manager before upgrade any 20.1 system to 20.2. That usually is shortly after the final release is done. Update Manager will inform you and you can also follow https://blog.linuxmint.com/ to know when it is possible to upgrade. Update Manager does a lot more. It does checks, updates meta packages, may hold back certain packages from the upgrade, may remove other packages if obsoleted after the upgrade and generally does a very controlled upgrade from a file detailing what it should do. Have a read in the Update Manager code.

You're not supposed to do this. However....peterf1972 wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 25, 2021 7:04 am Is this a fairly reliable update to the 20.2 beta? Boots fine, all features i tested worked fine?
I'd say: don't do it on an important machine that you need for your work. What you do on a testing rig doesn't matter. Note that in the past I've been able to break the desktop environment several times, after applying that method and then installing fresh updates.
Bottom line: testing rig, who cares. Have fun.

Doing it in Virtualbox is the right way to go, so you did well. I just downloaded a 20.2 ISO instead of what you did. Don't do it on an actual 20.1 system that you are using "for real". Not until it's out of beta anyway.
