How do you increase text size on GRUB screen?

Post by RamBurner »

How do you increase text size on GRUB screen?
After I enabled Secure Boot and TPM, it works fine but the text size is small. I'm on a 50" screen. The text size is fine everywhere else, just GRUB has tiny text.

Thank you, I'll do that, I'm sure that will fix it.

How can I do the opposite? I recently installed "sudo apt-get grub2-theme-mint-2k" but now I find the font is too big and I would like to go back to the default font. How can I do that? Thanks. I'm using Cinnamon Mint 20.2...

RamBurner & matelot1958:

You can set bigger grub font size indirectly by setting lower grub screen resolution. For example, if native resolution of your monitor is 1920x1080 and you want to increase size of text by lowering screen resolution to 1366x768, do these steps:

(0. if installed, remove grub theme by apt purge grub2-theme-mint command)

1. launch Terminal and insert command
sudo xed /etc/default/grub

2. find the following line
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

3. delete hashmark at beginning and edit desired resolution; it then should look like this:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1366x768

4. save file, exit editor

5. run this command
sudo update-grub

6. reboot & test your new grub text size

7. if not satisfactory, repeat the whole process with different standard resolution; including step 5.

Yes--exactly how I do it.

You can customise grub fonts to any size. The method explained above increases/decreases everything on the grub page including the border.

If it's only font size you wish to change, which was what was asked for, then this method is more appropriate.

That's easy:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove grub2-theme-mint-2k
Followed by installation of the smaller theme for the Grub menu:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install grub2-theme-mint
Reboot.

This should make the font of the boot menu much smaller, whilst preserving its nice looks.

To add to valouch's post:

When grub menu show, press "c" which will bring you to the grub command line.

Type videoinfo and press enter. This will show you all the possible resolutions that you can use for grub. Write them on a piece of paper.

Load Mint. Run this command:

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
It will ask for your password twice.

Edit this line (if GRUB_GFXMODE=... isn't there, add it):
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

Remove the "#" and change the resolution to one that was listed from videoinfo. Lower resolutions will give you larger text. Save the file.

Run:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Reboot to see the results. Keep trying the others listed until you get one that you like.

P.S. Whatever you do, please don't use Grub Customizer. It infiltrates your whole grub system and is almost impossible to fix if anything goes wrong with grub and kernel updates.
