20.2 won't install on 2 different computers [solved]

Post by johnlvs2run »

I installed Linux Mint 19.3 xfce on both the Thinkpad and Biostar computers ten days ago and both installs were easy. Now I've been trying to install 20.2 xfce for the last two days, downloaded the iso and put it on the 3.0 USB twice. Both times the isos were verified correctly and the results were the same.

The Thinkpad loads the live USB, but there's no install icon and no way to install it. The Biostar doesn't even show the USB in the bios, and I'm using the same bios settings now as for 19.3 ten days ago. Both of these computers / motherboards are about 10 years old.

I got a new SSD to replace the 10 year old HDD, so I need to know what to do in order to use the SSD.
Is there any way to get 20.2 to install on these computers and to be able to repeat the installs if necessary,
or is the best option to install 19.3 on the SSD and stay with 19.3 on both computers?

Is this on the same usb you used for LM19?

I'm not sure what I did, but I had a problem re-using the usb I use for live sessions when changing the usb to a newer version of Mint. I was getting error messages as well as squirrelly results. Just like you, I had verified the ISOs. I finally deleted everything on the drive (rather than relying on the ISO burn program to overwrite what was there) and then put the image on it. That worked for me.

When that happens to me, I open GParted and create a new partition table then burn the new iso image.

LM19 is on a 2.0 USB, and LM20 is on a 3.0 Cruzer. I've ordered another 2.0 just in case.
The Biostar Bios had a USB boot option with LM18, but with LM19 it doesn't show up anymore.
The Bios on both machines are quite old and I'm still considering which MB / CPU upgrade to choose.

As you and others are also having issues with LM20, perhaps I should stay with LM19 for now.

I have seen posts where people had issues with regards to whether the port was usb 2.0 or 3.0. I do not recall if the type of usb mattered.

Maybe the port is going bad?

It's booting fine now that I redid the usb. No problems.

I did try a different port and the same thing happened.
The USB showed up and booted from the Thinkpad bios, but the installation image was missing.

While you verified the ISO, whether or not the ISO was properly transferred to the usb is another issue. Since options are missing, it sounds like perhaps that did not happen.

SMG, thank you very much for your feedback.
That 20.2 didn't install is perhaps an issue with the 3.0 USB.
I'll stay with 19.3 for now as there are plenty of other things for me to work on.
