Thank you to the forum. My machine is running with the 'broken' configuration 'table' (atchu, Kadaitchaman. :) .)

and I would double the size of your / partition.
Andy, after trying out my configuration, I soon saw the merit in your advice to double the root partition. I went back with a live USB and using parted I resized the / system partition at the expense of the /home data partition. It amazed me how fast new application files can use up the system partition.
So...a hearty and cheerful thanks!

Just be grateful that this is linux and not windows where applications are more space hungry.
