Solved - new installation - create / home partition
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO SET THE MOUNT POINT DURING INSTALLATION?
I am using a Cinnamon 19.3 live USB for new install. To set up the partitions I go to "other options."
I want
Partition #1 ext2 for boot.
Partition #2 ext4 for system with mount point '/'
Partition #3 ext4 for data with mount point '/home'
Partition #4 extended partition for swap area
It is a very straight forward partition table but I am pulling my hair out trying to set it up. 3 days now. I have not figured out how to set the desired mount points! It seems the installer does not allow one to set the mount. The mount option is greyed out. Can I use the terminal?
Please help.

Why do you feel it is necessary to shout at people?Olmong Gooz wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 28, 2021 12:57 pm WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO SET THE MOUNT POINT DURING INSTALLATION?
It is also a very broken partition 'table'. It makes absolutely no sense to have a solitary swap partition in the extended space. Both root and home should be in there. Also, you don't say how big your boot partition is going to be so we don't know if you are allowing sufficient or too much space for it.It is a very straight forward partition table...

That will tell you what you need.
Re: new installation - create / home partition
HHMMM so by using /boot i presume you are going for an old school bios install?? /boot
and not an efi boot install? EFI system fat32
i'll hazzard a guess you that you might need to right click -> manage flags -> boot on either of those partitions then hopefully the others will fall into place.
i have seen swap on extended partitions before but cant remember which distro's do it or why.
most of my systems only have:
/efi system
/
/home
but then i have 16gig ram so might not need swap

Re: new installation - create / home partition
You will need to clarify whether you are booting legacy or UEFI and you may be confusing an EFI partition with a /boot partition (which you don't need). You don't need a swap partition in LM19 it will use a swap file by default.

yeah i read it......Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:57 amWrong guess and misplaced hope. Read the linked article.
wrong guess maybe,
given I kinda gave up on using the installer to set-up the partitions, would always tell me i had something set-up wrong,
so now instead i set up partitions using gparted then use installer to select the partitions i want to use and install it.
- open gparted
- create partition table MBR or GPT depending on system
- set boot flag
- create partitions (note just gotta remember which partition size you set for which component /boot, /, /home)
- close gparted
- launch installer (when it gets to partitions)
- add /boot or EFI sytem, set mount point and set to use
- add / for root, set mount point and set to use
- add /home, set mount point and set to use
- click install

Ubuntu Documentation has a webpage (tutorial) dedicated to creating a home partition. It was last edited in 2015, but still appears current. Have a look. Partitioning/Home/Moving

I fail to see how that assists the original poster. The article is about "... instructions for migrating your home directory into its own dedicated partition", and the question asked by the OP is in capital letters, "WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO SET THE MOUNT POINT DURING INSTALLATION?"SteveR wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 29, 2021 9:36 pm Ubuntu Documentation has a webpage (tutorial) dedicated to creating a home partition. Re: new installation - create / home partition
So @Kadaitcha Man
I thought id look into this a little, by completely wiping my system (yes every single drive) and re-installing inxi below
The OP is right at least under GPT TABLE set-up it is absolutely impossible to get a logical parttion let alone set up extended partition (even under GParted) ....
as per your article suggesting / and /home being on logical volumes it just wont happen... every single partition created HAS to be Primary there is no other option
so I can see why OP is frustrated....

as per your article suggesting / and /home being on logical volumes it just wont happen... every single partition created HAS to be Primary there is no other option
so I can see why OP is frustrated....

Re: new installation - create / home partition
I fail to see what you are trying prove, unless it's that you don't know what you're talking about. It is impossible to setup a logical partition on a GPT drive because logical partitions are not needed, they are for MBR partition tables only. The OP made absolutely no mention of GPT or MBR.cretsiah wrote: ⤴Fri Jul 30, 2021 9:26 pm The OP is right at least under GPT TABLE set-up it is absolutely impossible to get a logical parttion let alone set up extended partition (even under GParted) ....

Re: new installation - create / home partition
that is about all that you really need to create on any New Installation.
- - some folks don't even use the /home partition,
but that is something that I'm still using on my PCs.
plus, even with an 64bit machine & operating system,
you can still utilise an MBR / MS-dos style of partitioning,
if you don't intent to use more than the Four Basic Partitions.
- - you can indeed go beyond that, but you do need to know an little more, about what you are doing.

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/suppo ... er_1_1.pdf1.2 Why do we need GPT
MBR Extended Boot Records, the commonly used alternative to GPT, are constrained by supporting only four primary partitions, by temporary schemes such as container partitions, and by allowing volume size less than 2TB only. This inhibits their use in solutions that need more primary partitions or larger volume size.

@Pierre @Kadaitcha Man
thanks
i have found for the sake of steam a fatter /home drive is easier to work with, than trying to add adittional drives.
the full clean wipe was to make sure windows was completely wiped from the system and any previous messes from experimentation made completely gone.
hopefully the OP now has the information they need as well...

How did steam, the size of the /home partition, additional drives, Windows, or wiping previous experiments get into this? The OP made absolutely no mention of any of those things. Not a single word.cretsiah wrote: ⤴Fri Jul 30, 2021 11:07 pm @Pierre @Kadaitcha Man

I'm sure you're only trying to help, but I'll never been convinced that inserting solutions to problems that are not known to exist is a good way to go about advising people.hopefully the OP now has the information they need as well...

First off...I am sorry to have shouted in my first message. I didn't realize the effect of all caps. Thanks for making it clear, Kadaitchieman. I am hugely appreciative of the responses that have been posted.
My house door was smashed in and my computer was robbed.I am working on a 12 year old 9 inch
Samsung, single core atom processor, 2GB RAM (maxxed out ), 160GB HDD (new.)
I had an eye surgery day before yesterday and am not fully recovered, so have not processed all the advice the community has so generously given. Be assured I am working on it with delight to be learning more about our wonderful open source world and linux mint. I have been using Linux for 15 years through various Ubuntu and Mint releases.
My boot partition is intended to be 512MB, ext2 legacy boot
My system partition to be 15GB mount at /.
My data partition to be around 140GB, mounted at /home
A swap partition of 2 - 4 GB
Thank you all very much. I'll get on it again as soon as I can see more clearly.
Love to all,

For clarity, I have zeroed the HDD. sudo dd if=zero of=sda. Took about 6 hours. It was a used HDD, new to this machine.
Re: new installation - create / home partition
You don't need a boot partition and I would double the size of your / partition.
