in mint 20.2 cinn...i tried to run the command : sudo grub-install /dev/sda
and get this error message: grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory.
in gparted i created an EFI directory . but i STILL get this error message.
how do i fix this ?

You don't, yet. You need to tell us what instructions you are following, and what problem you are trying to solve, eg why you are trying to install grub, why you needed to create an EFI partition and so on. You also need to post the output of
inxi -Fxz
