Keyboard delay for about 1 minute before I can do initial log in

Post by conwayphelps »

For some reason my keyboard has an input delay of anywhere from 45 seconds to one minute from the time my log in screen comes up until I can actually log in. Other than the annoyance of the initial delay I can detect no other issues, there being no effect on the laptop in any way that I can find. I have tried updating the drivers through the Driver Manager, but the checker can't find any new drivers.

The am using the latest stable Linux Mint "Edge" release of 20.2, Uma. I initially tried using the regular version of 20.2. but it would not load the driver for my screen (it would only load the 1024x768 generic) or keyboard/touchpad (completely did not work, no functionality). After much searching (using the default OS for the laptop, UUGH!) I finally found a reference (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1299067 ... e-graphics) to another person who had the Intel Core i7-1165 processor with Iris XE onboard graphics with the exact same problem. In the post someone recommended updating the kernel to the OEM version 20.04. I thought, What the hell... I connected an external keyboard and mouse, I then loaded the OEM kernel 20.04 with "sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04". I restarted and everything loaded and worked as expected. I don't recall if there was a delay or not with that kernel. I may load it and see if there was or not. [Edit: I loaded the linux-oem-20.04 and it still has the delay on startup] Of course, having to side load the OEM kernel was negated completely with the "Edge" version, with the only issue being the initial keyboard delay.

My system information is as follows:

Driver Manager is for third party proprietary drivers. I would not expect there to be any keyboard drivers in Driver Manager.

Your computer is new enough that it would need the Edge ISO rather than the regular Mint ISO. You have already discovered that.

The delay only happens at that one time during boot and then there is no delay afterwards? It is just the initial loading of the driver that seems slow and the keyboard responds properly after that? I was not sure since you talked about using an external keyboard and mouse to load the oem kernel which would not seem necessary if the keyboard was fine after the initial delay.

Hopefully this will clarify a little. When I was loading the regular version of LM 20.2 I had no keyboard or touchpad functionality whatsoever so I couldn't do the installation. The monitor wasn't detected either so it loaded the default drivers giving me only a 1024x768 view. The monitory was usable, but that's about it. To be able to install the regular version with no kernel update I had to use an external keyboard/mouse to get anything typed into the laptop. Once I was able to get the OS installed (with the external keyboard) I was able to use the terminal to update the kernel to the OEM version, which had the necessary drivers to correct the functionality issue with all three, monitor, keyboard, and touchpad. But, It still has the keyboard delay at boot up.

Once I discovered there was the "Edge" version, this had the necessary ingredients included to do a complete installation with all the functionality of the keyboard, touchpad, and monitor built in so I could do the installation without any issues that I could see. Since the installation opens in root and there's no login I did not notice if there was any keyboard delay there.

While I'm using either version (regular with the updated OEM kernel or "Edge") there is that initial delay which varies from 45 seconds to one minute at boot up where there is no keyboard functionality whatsoever (there is no issue with the touchpad). As far as I can tell there is no other issue that I have noticed.

All I think to do is check the journal or Xorg log to see if something is showing which might indicate what is causing the delay.

What is the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i '(EE)\|(WW)'?

I have those same lines in my file, so that is not going to help us.

Let's try journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the current boot cycle and sends it to termbin. I'm heading to bed now, but will check it tomorrow. There may not be errors in it, but maybe there will be a time gap between messages that might indicate what is happening.

The output I get is:

Code: Select all

https://termbin.com/8lzm
Also, I did check with booting into the installation media and there is a delay in the keyboard there as well, I just didn't notice it before.

Thanks for checking this because I noticed some items which might cause delays, but they would not be present when booting to the install media.

I found this section of the messages which has a 16 second time difference and mentions the keyboard.

Code: Select all

Sep 17 20:40:55 csp-15t-dy200 systemd-timesyncd[1051]: Initial synchronization to time server 91.189.89.199:123 (ntp.ubuntu.com).
Sep 17 20:41:11 csp-15t-dy200 kernel: input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input38
I took the i8042 identifier and searched the journal and found this.

Code: Select all

Sep 17 20:40:22 csp-15t-dy200 kernel: i8042: PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP0303:PS2K] at 0x60,0x64 irq 1
Sep 17 20:40:22 csp-15t-dy200 kernel: i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp
Sep 17 20:40:22 csp-15t-dy200 kernel: serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1
But what I found seems to indicate that information would relate to a touchpad or mouse and you have indicated those are working. Others get those messages and do not have problems.

The last idea I have is to check if there are any BIOS/UEFI settings which might relate to the keyboard (or maybe the mouse). I would think any setting might be to turn it on or off and it is working (so it must be on), but maybe there is something in BIOS/UEFI.

There are no Mouse/Touchpad settings in the HP UEFI/BIOS at all. HP is very minimal with it's settings capabilities.
I don't know what is going on with my keyboard. I saw those settings as well and was wondering why this was coming up

Code: Select all

PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp
As far as I knew, the PS/2 onboard controller for the keyboard has been the same pretty much for decades. Why would a port be disabled? Maybe it is something that is unique to this laptop and motherboard. Is the i8042.nopnp something that comes into play later on in the boot sequence?

The documentation I've seen on the newer/newest HP laptops seems to indicate there is not much the user can change, but I figured it was worth a look.

There are a lot of messages in the journal that sometimes are really only a concern for specific types of hardware that not all computers have. That is why we tend to only focus on messages which seem to relate to a specific problem.

I do not know how this keyboard/touchpad are wired so it might not matter that the port is disabled. It might be an "extra" port that had a use in the past and is not used in this computer? I do not know.

I ran a search through the entire file on the i8042 term and did not find anything else of note.

The fact the keyboard works properly after the initial slow start means there are only a few places to check. It's more of a "blip" of a problem that disappears rather than an ongoing one.

Thank you for checking on what you could. I really appreciate you taking the time to investigate this problem. I suspect that it is something that will be rectified in a later build and won't worry about it now. It isn't a major problem and is something that I can live with for the time being.

I found something which might help you while investigating a similar issue on an HP laptop. The info is in this post.

I tried adding the line to the grub as it suggests along with the "quiet splash" but the delay still exists. Most of the time, I have discovered, if I change the desktop environment away from and back to the Cinnamon Default it will allow the password entry without fail. I don't know if this information will help, or not, but, so far, it's the only thing I've found that works every time that allows the keyboard.

Could you please describe the steps you are taking to change the desktop environment away and back?

And could the timing of doing those actions be taking about a minute (so it might be more the elapsed time rather than the actual actions)?
