What are you trying to upgrade from & to??
A copy of the terminal output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
posted between the 'code' tags (</>) would also be useful..

I'm not trying to upgrade to anything. (I believe Cinnamon 20.2 is as upgraded as one can be at this time.) Just following the directions in the User Guide.
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxxxrz
I'm sorry. I don't understand (even looking at http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/bio ... nxi.1.html) how to structure your requested terminal input (I assume xxx means what came after [sudo] password for xxx OR does it mean xxx@xxx ?)

OK, according to your output you are using
Linux Mint 20.2 Uma base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
That is the latest version of Mint... i.e. there is nothing it can be upgraded to.
Once Mint 20.3 is available (probably around year end) then the Update Manager will automatically offer you a upgrade to that..

What User Guide are you following??

https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... nt-20.html

though after this I was going to go through:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID1.2

I just want to make sure I have all the basics down...

For example, I've heard that 'Linux 20.2' (or 'Linux Cinnamon') is 'unstable' but I don't know exactly what that means, to wit:
Does it mean it might crash or freeze (in which case I can restore the Snapshot)?
or
Does it have something to do with, say, the fact that in Mint the Firefox extension 'Bookmark Search Plus 2' is abysmal compared to the same extension in the Win10/Firefox environment?

And did I read somewhere that there's a way to switch between the "Themes" Xfce and MATE (using Grub) without reinstalling what I'm running? (In other words, what is the relationship of "Themes" to "Versions")

The title of the User Manual that you are using is
How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20
.
You have (somehow) managed to Install Mint 20.2.
The two things are different so it should come as no surprise that you will get instructions that fail if you follow that User Manual plan.. :D

Following the Easy Linux Project is just about the most sensible thing that you can do now that you have installed Mint 20.2.
I've heard that 'Linux 20.2' (or 'Linux Cinnamon') is 'unstable'
I don't know where you heard that but it is simply untrue. I have been running Cinnamon Mint 20.2 since it was released without any issues what so ever.
Does it mean it might crash or freeze
The chances of that happening are unlikely unless you have cutting edge, or faulty, equipment.

I don't use FireFox on a regular basis so I can't comment on that, other than to say that many users seem to have been unhappy about the direction that it has been progressing of late.
There are plenty of alternatives to FireFox available with Mint.

I believe that it is possible to add additional Desktop versions at the sign on page (so after BIOS).
Personally I think that you need a very good reason to do that, if you prefer Mate (or Xfce) to Cinnamon then just install that version instead.
Themes are ways of altering a Distribution version to more suit your personal likes, fonts, colours etc.
Mate, Cinnamon & Xfce have significant differences between each other (File Manager for example) that are far greater than just a theme..
