[SOLVED] GRUB is only a command prompt

Post by iliketrains »

This computer was a dual boot with Windows 10 and LM 18.3 on a single hard drive. I have installed LM 20.2 and (I think) completely wiped 18.3.
After the install the computer boots to a GRUB command prompt, no menu like it had previously. I'm not even sure what command would boot each OS.
It is possible to boot into either Windows or Mint through the BIOS but that's a pretty clunky way of doing things.
Is there an easy way to fix GRUB or is it best to try the install again ?

Hi iliketrains and welcome to the forum. Probably no need to reinstall.
Live boot into LM with your USB or DVD and then type this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Then restart and see if that works. If not, then consider doing some of the things described here:

or just wait around here for better help.

Another thing to try if all else fails is this:

Thanks for the reply mikeflan.
I decided to try a re-install and this time grub installed as expected. I must have goofed somehow the first time.
Happy to have the latest Mint LTS although fresh installs are always a bit of work installing software and so on. For me Windows is like rush hour and Mint is like cruising a country road. Too bad my CAD software requires Windows or Mac.
