Lenovo 3000-G530. Gettign: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'. Press any key to continue...

Post by lead67 »

Hi!

I am getting this error at boot, once I pressed a key, it proceeds to boot normally. I am seeking help on how to fix this issue. I would appreciate the help.

Searching the forum for help, I found this viewtopic.php?f=46&t=254637 with kind of the same issue, but no solution since it was fixed by itself.

Reading the post one of the replies state to simply install grub and update it. Should I just do that?

I would appreciate the help.

Your system appears to be a single-boot computer where you probably did an erase and install of Linux Mint. Doing that automatically installs grub. However, because you only have one operating system installed, the grub menu is set up not to show.

What is the output of your sudo parted /dev/sda "print free"

Have you tried running fsck? To do that you would want to boot to your Mint install usb/dvd so the hard drive can be unmounted to check and fix(if needed) the file system. How to Use fsck Command to Check and Repair Filesystem.

SMG - Thanks

Output on print free. I am sorry that it is in Spanish, this system is for my mother. I am sure you know the output.

I have not tried the fsck. I will do that and post results. Please, let me know if everything looks fine with the output listed above.

Thank you

I entered the following bellow, but I don't have any idea. I need help to understand the output. This was executed with live usb.

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo fsck -f /dev/sda
fsck from util-linux 2.34
e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Found a dos partition table in /dev/sda
Thanks

The disk has an msdos partition table and separate boot and root partitions. All that looks like as I would expect it to look. Given the output in your subsequent post, I will highlight two lines from the output.

Code: Select all

 Disco /dev/sda: 160GB
 5 539MB 160GB 160GB logical ext4
You can see it says this information is about /dev/sda and there is a partition with ext4 (the Mint install) on this drive.

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo fsck -f /dev/sda
fsck from util-linux 2.34
e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Found a dos partition table in /dev/sda
Going through the big text block in the middle: The device is valid. It really does contain an ext4 filesystem. (You would not be able to get in to run Mint if it were not.) Therefore, the suggestion seems to be running one of the two listed commands. You would substitute <device> with /dev/sda.

Therefore the commands to try to clear up the situation would be

Code: Select all

e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sda
or
e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sda
One of those commands will hopefully fix the superblock so it automatically boots properly. So far, the bad superblock does not seem to be preventing you from getting into Mint. Although one of these commands is likely to work, it is always better to make sure you have a backup of your data before giving it a try to see if the situation gets corrected.

I gave it try on your last line to use the code provided by the system, and this is input from the command.

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sda
e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Found a dos partition table in /dev/sda
What do you think? Forgot to mention, I tried both commands with same exact results.

Glad I refreshed the page and saw the edit.

My next suggestion would be to check the disk drive for errors. Is that the original disk for the computer?

The Disks app in Mint does have an option for SMART Data and Self-tests. Click the three vertical buttons in the upper right to get the menu to show.

Here is the same result as the second line.

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sda
e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Found a dos partition table in /dev/sda

Also, checking partitions I get a warning at the end, is it normal?

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ sudo parted -l
Model: ATA ST9160827AS (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 160GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 1049kB 538MB 537MB primary fat32 boot
 2 539MB 160GB 160GB extended
 5 539MB 160GB 160GB logical ext4

Warning: The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but
Linux says it is 512 bytes.

Either one should work because the output of the command is already there.

I noticed when comparing the "free" data to the one in the other thread that the block size was different. How was this drive used before you installed Mint on it?

This system had Windows 7 but it was already with viruses. I decided to give this to my mother, and installed for the very first time Mint.

Thanks.

So it's the original hard drive? And you just did an erase and install of Mint?

Unless someone else has other ideas, the two possibilities I can think of are file system corruption or actual hard disk corruption. We've already attempt the fsck which should fix file system corruption, but you could also try re-installing Mint to see if that clears it.

If the issue is one of the hard disk going bad, then a replacement disk would be the answer. Sometimes disks can have bad sectors and they just stay that way. Other times once one starts going bad then it can spread to others.

Yes, original drive and I did a clean install (erase and install)

I am very much appreciated of the time you took to help me. I have a feeling this drive is the culprit. We tried everything and still not fixing the issue. I do thank you so much for your support, I DO! :D

You're welcome.
With a drive more than 10 years old, it is likely that is the problem. It's better you find out now than after your mom started having problems with it. ;)
