Macbook pro 2.2 - 2007 with Mint 20.2 - Issues

Post by mccpiloto »

Hello everybody. I managed to install Linux min 20.2 on MacBook pro 2.2 late 2007:
I have used another computer to install Linux onto a SSD because MacBook didn't accept to continue the installation. After MacBook recognizes the installation flash drive and try to initiate the installation the computer goes into a black screen and nothing happens. I think it's some kind of video card issue or BIOS(EFI) issues.
After installing onto SSD using another computer and them putting it back to MacBook, Linux loads up holding down the option key and choosing the drive ("windows") or simply waiting 60 seconds or more to complete boot (this option takes too long). Does someone very smart could suggest me a way for a faster boot? GPARTED BOOT partition shows: File system FAT32 Status - mounted boot/efi - Flag - boot /dev/sda1. Probably I need a way to make a perfect Flash driver installer that walks around MacBook's "BIOS"

Welcome to the forum, mccpiloto.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Mint is running smoothly on this old computer, the only issue is the booting time. It takes almost 2 min to complete even running in a SSD. Tried to install a bootloader to deal with mac bios but this computer bios is probably 32bits besides the processor being 64bits

My suggestion is to turn off "quiet splash" so that you can see the boot messages and maybe you'll see what's hanging your boot. With an ssd that machine shouldn't take anywhere near that amount of time to boot up.

1. edit (with sudo or as root) /etc/default/grub and change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

2. run

sudo update-grub

3. Reboot

The graphics are loaded properly.

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD RV530/M56-P [Mobility Radeon X1600]
vendor: Apple MacBook Pro driver: radeon v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0
chip ID: 1002:71c5

OpenGL: renderer: ATI RV530 v: 2.1 Mesa 21.0.3 direct render: Yes

Here is someone else with what appears to be the same laptop kernel update broke "MacBookPro2,2 v: 1.0" with no "shift-key" recognized during boot to access GRUB [Solved].
