(Solved) Mint 19.3 Boot Repair: An error occur during repair. Help, please!!

Post by BillionDollars »

Hi, guys / girls.

I don't have access to my email and I'm running from the USB stick to send all this info. Hope someone can help me here out fast. I wanted to take the computer in to computer shop to have the system check for hardware issues although if I shut down then system may be doing some other unexpected things.

I have 2 other threads viewtopic.php?f=46&t=359432 and this viewtopic.php?f=50&t=359640 about this computer problems.

I'm stuck here and I really don't want to loose this hdd's at this point in time. Mike November suggested
You will find all the needed tools here: https://www.system-rescue.org/, read carefully the online doc.
I did burn a rescue DVD although it doesn't boot up it shows an error message so fast that I can't read it.Then the computer try to boot and then I get a screen that tell me the Invoiroment blocks is wrong presss any key... Well, then this computer just hang or ask that I must run fsck /dev/sda1 or sdb1 and that is going on for the last week.

Still have issues after boot repair and this morning I got this:
An error occurred during the repair.

A new file (/var/log/boot-repair/20211022_062756/Boot-Info_20211022_0627.txt) will open in your text viewer.

In case you still experience boot problem, indicate its content to:
boot.repair@gmail.com

You can now reboot your computer.
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdb (ATA ST1000DM010-2EP1) disk!

The boot files of [Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition)
This was underneath the top message.

Well, then this computer just hang or ask that I must run fsck /dev/sda1 or sdb1 and that is going on for the last week.
And have you done that? It sounds like sdb is dying or dead. It would also explain why boot-repair failed to re-install grub to sdb.

HI, Andy.
I just coming from computer shop. The motherboard, the sata controller and 1 TBD hdd is 100%.

So the problem is inside Linux when it's installed.

I have previously posted threads about issues I had with things that went wrong or that are a problem.

I can't at the moment run the rescue disk that I burn because for some reason it doesn't boot up as it suppose to do, although when I insert it when I boot from the USB stick it shows all the nessasary files.

Yes I run the fsck every time it says that something is wrong with it. The pc shuffle the hdd around every time I boot up, so why it do it I don't know.

HI, mikaelrask.
The USB and DVD I use is verified, no problem with it as I install it on other pc's also with no problem.

In my previous threads I share everything about the pc and in this thread in the code I provided is everything to the problem.

All hardware were tested today and nothing wrong on the hardware side, so the problem lays inside the Linux installation.

Boot repair is also on the mint iso (I think) so you don't need a separate stick/DVD.

Nothing wrong with grub:

Code: Select all

Reinstall the GRUB of sdb1 into the MBR of sdb
Installing for i386-pc platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
grub-install /dev/sdb: exit code of grub-install /dev/sdb:0
and it also put grub on sda, so you could try booting from that drive, not that I think it will make any difference.

Code: Select all

Reinstall the GRUB of sdb1 into the MBR of sda
Installing for i386-pc platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
grub-install /dev/sda: exit code of grub-install /dev/sda:0
But you got:

Code: Select all

The boot files of [Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them.
Don't think this is the issue, but post the output from sudo parted --list.

Hey again the only things i see here but again im no expert the kernel your using atm but a minor thing, open up the update manager >view> view kernals install the lts kernal 4.15 and use that sens the 5 kernel your using is not supported anymore the 4.15 is supported until 2023. second is this Partition Table: mac
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size File system Name Flags
1 2048B 6143B 4096B Apple

have mac been install to this laptop?

meaby a fresh install on linux mint might be a good option here but go for linux mint 19,2 it comes with the lts kernel 4,15 by default and from the update manager you can update to linux mint 19,3 if you wish.

Andy I took with my phone. File to large to attach.
sdb seems to be one of your problems, with sdb1 your linux / partition.

Boot your mint install stick, make sure you are connected to the internet, either wireless or hard wired with an ethernet cable and...

Open a terminal and sudo fsck /dev/sdb1, e.g.

Code: Select all

andy@T432 ~ $ sudo fsck /dev/sda5 <<< this is my / partition on sda
[sudo] password for andy:
fsck from util-linux 2.34
e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
root: clean, 271348/960992 files, 1606719/3840000 blocks
copy the terminal output into a text file, e.g. myfile.txt and then in a terminal cat ~/myfile.txt | nc termbin.com 9999. It will return a link, e.g.

Code: Select all

andy@T432 ~ $ cat ~/myfile.txt | nc termbin.com 9999
https://termbin.com/1voe
Check the link in your browser and then post it in your reply using the link button above the reply window.
