[SOLVED] New install working, but after Updating in Update Manager my 2nd monitor stopped working.

Post by a1Drummer07 »

Hi all,

The monitor was working right after the install, but after updating it stopped working.

I am a newbie to Linux and would appreciate any help! Thanks!

Hey and welcome to the forum and linux mint, first question did you check the cable to the monitor so its hooked up correctly/have no glitch in it? second can you run this command in the terminal to give us some system information so we have something to work with

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxrzc0
good luck

I dual booted with windows 10 btw, and the 2nd monitor works fine on windows 10. The 2nd monitor was also working on Linux Mint after the install, but before the update.

Here is my system info:

That's only part of your system info, but it might be enough. If not, you can supply the rest later.

Your system is currently running in Intel Power-save mode. Therefore, if your laptop's external monitor ports are run by Nvidia, then your external monitor will not work since Nvidia is not running (to save power).

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI
driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b
Device-2: NVIDIA GP106M [GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile]

Have you installed the recommended Nvidia driver shown in Update Manager and rebooted?

If so, check to see what mode is showing in the nvidia-prime-applet in the lower right of your screen in the panel. Given the above data, I would expect it to be an Intel icon.

You most likely want that applet to be in On-Demand mode. After changing the setting, you will need to reboot the computer for the change to take effect.

I got it working!

So the Nvidia settings weren't even showing up before. The current driver (non open source) was installed and active. Still nothing. I had to switch kernels to 5.11. Somehow after the original OS install and initial Update Manager update it was still on kernel 5.4...which may be the most recent one as its supported out to 2025. But for now, 5.11 is working.
