have to reboot for monitor to work, with most my most recent [SOLVED]

Post by stillcen »

Greetings;

I updated my system, which i had not done in a bit, and got this issue along with the update.

When i start up my computer the monitor stays blank. I press keys and nothing. I hear the "brrrinng" of the system when it is done loading, but the monitor on light just blinks like it is waiting for input. i power off the system and then restart it. it works just fine on the second boot.

a mystery.

and thanks.

I will also add that i thought that it might be an issue with sleep/ screen saver mode.

I turned the screen saver mode to 'Never' and the problem presists.

also after not using the computer for a bit the monitor goes black and the computer can not be woken up unless i boot it twice.

could Not find if there was sleep mode that i could turn off.

I am deeply puzzeled.

The machine is over 10 years old, probably 13. Support in new kernels can drop off. You might find an advantage in dropping back an update or two using Timeshift or by selecting an earlier kernel in the Update Manager.

Support might disappear due to a change then reappear in the next update. You could revert now, test new updates when they arrive, and revert when they do not work. You could also look in recycle bins for stuff less than 10 years old.

What did you update? Knowing that would help us to be able to help you.

It sounds like the graphics driver may not be loading.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of your system before you did the update? If so, roll back to it and see if the problem still happens to rule out possible hardware-related issues.

If it does not, then you could add the updates in smaller groups to see if you can determine which one might be the problem.

I am going to go ahead and call this one fixed.

It appears that it was/is a sleep issue.

I found the screen saver and turned it off but the computer continued to go into sleep mode after 30 minutes. I looked under preferences and under the menu button and could not find the sleep options. I eventually just type "power" in the the menu seach field and the power options came up. I turned off the sleep setting and the issue appears to be no more.

i did not wish to go back in updates as historicaly i have had issues with being so out of date as i could not longer even update and had to do a fresh install.
i did update from Tessa to Tricia and this did Not fix the issue.

i apprecate the helpfull responces and humor in the come backs.

I do believe that i will look into this "time shift" i am not familar with it. I really hopes its icon is a blue police box of a British nature.

I also will be keeping an eye on the compture recycling bins. I am continually stunned/floored/flabbergasted by what folks toss. My PCjr no longer can be updated but is still running strong after 37 years with out a single issue.
