Error: [Firmware Bug]: ioapic 2 has no mapping iomm...

Post by 3uchl0 »

Hi,
I have reoccurring problem with my linux mint 20.1 (cinnamon or XFCE) when installed on different devices. Installation is smooth, however after a while, several system re-boots, installation of recommended updates and couple of days of usage, the system starts to occasionally freeze and eventually it is collapsed to re-boot. On reboot I got the below error message. Currently I'm using macbook pro mid 2012 (system info ran from bootable flash is listed below), but it also happened to me on different Dell laptop. Dmesg output is attached.

Any experience or useful advice?
I have only found these threads:

https://ostechnix.com/how-to-fix-busybo ... on-ubuntu/

But was not helpful for me.
Thank you for any advice.

Is there a specific reason you did not run the inxi command on the installed version? Usually, it is best to do that if you are having problems after installation.

The information you did post seems to indicate the computer is running quite warm. That does tend to be an issue with Apple hardware.

DMAR firmware bug. Broken BIOS?
Just listing errors without knowing whether they were resolved may give you more cause for concern than is needed. Sometimes errors happen and are later corrected.

In the case of the DMAR-IR errors, those are related to your computer's BIOS/UEFI. The Linux kernel was expecting the code to be written to a certain set of specs and it was not. ACPI errors are also related to the computer's BIOS/UEFI.

This link DMAR firmware bug. Broken BIOS? mentions that possibility. However, one of the responses also mentions running a file system check helped resolve issues. Corruption of the file system might be why things are good at first and then get worse. If it repeatedly happens, then it is likely the hard drive is going bad.
