Acer disabling Optane/RST [SOLVED]

Post by krauster »

I've been getting help in the Graphics Cards and Monitors forum and during the forum discussion about getting the nvidia driver installed correctly the moderator had me run the journalctl command and when I presented the results to her she saw something else that I had mentioned about a slow boot. She suggested I bring this question to this forum.
Check the 1.5 minute timeout at the beginning:

Code: Select all

I should mention that I have other problems with this install. It is a dual SSD laptop that came with windows spread across both drives and I did a bunch of stuff that might have been out of order to get it so that windows is on one drive and linux on the other but I am also seeing that I have some RAID stuff set up that was not intentional. It's kind of messed up.

For a starter can someone point me to what the timeout is looking for and where I might find it, or whether I need it.

and here's the setup:

These mount commands

Code: Select all

Job dev-disk-by\x2duuid-8481\x2d1F3B.device/start timed out.
are not in your /etc/fstab or in your blkid, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I am not knowledgeable on RAID or EFI, hopefully someone else can help out.

The messages from the other topic might be related to the BIOS update you made. It might have made some changes.

Your data listed in the first post of this topic shows a section for RAID.

Code: Select all

RAID:
Hardware-1: Intel 82801 Mobile SATA Controller [RAID mode] driver: ahci
  v: 3.0 port: 5060 bus ID: 00:17.0 chip ID: 8086.282a rev: N/A
The inxi data in the first post in the other topic does not.

The messages from the other topic match the output in this topic in that it shows the controller in RAID mode, but that output was from after you made the BIOS update.

Code: Select all

Nov 27 15:18:27 stev-Nitro-AN517-52 kernel: ahci 0000:00:17.0: version 3.0
Nov 27 15:18:27 stev-Nitro-AN517-52 kernel: ahci 0000:00:17.0: Found 1 remapped NVMe devices.
Nov 27 15:18:27 stev-Nitro-AN517-52 kernel: ahci 0000:00:17.0: Switch your BIOS from RAID to AHCI mode to use them.
Nov 27 15:18:27 stev-Nitro-AN517-52 kernel: ahci 0000:00:17.0: AHCI 0001.0301 32 slots 1 ports 6 Gbps 0x1 impl RAID mode

I'm sure you are stating it clearly but I don't know what you mean.

I'm trying to recall when I started noticing that the boot was taking longer. It might have been after the BIOS update that I did that took the BIOS from v1 to v2, all around the same time we were experimenting with different kernels to get the nvidia driver working. If so and the BIOS made the RAID changes then maybe the fixes will be complicated?

And by the way does the screen shot of GParted drive assignments look correct? For a very basic setup wouldn't I really only be shooting for one Windows partition on one drive and another for linux on the other SSD? (or more if I wanted to install other distros) I see four and they are using different file systems.

I'm leaning toward taking the easy way out for my abilities, wiping both SSDs and starting fresh and making sure RAID is not complicating things. Of course if I do that it is also something I'll have to figure out and a separate topic.

There is an entire new section called RAID in your inxi output now that was not there before you did the BIOS update.

That RAID section indicates your system is running in [RAID mode] and you are using the driver: ahci. I think that is the driver you need to run Mint. I think the mode may be why there were errors in the log.

My guess is you just have to change the SATA MODE line in BIOS from RAID mode to SATA mode, but I do not know what specific options are available. I also do not know how that might impact a Windows install. I do not normally help with those issues and am not very familiar with the specifics.

You only supplied a screenshot for one drive, sda. You have four partitions on that one drive.

If you have another drive, you would have to select it from the drop-down list in the upper right of GParted where it currently says /dev/sda (931.51GiB). Your second drive is probably sdb.

Normally you need sata mode set AHCI not RST, if not linux will not even see the drive. But, we had a recent post where the user managed to install manjaro (I think) with a 5.13 kernel and it worked, mint with 5.4 would not see the drive. So I think support for RST may have been added in the 5.13 kernel. That's the extent of my knowledge.

I just noticed on inxi output for someone who has the 5.4 kernel installed (see below) their RAID section (using inxi version 3.3.09) is showing the same output as here. Perhaps only the driver has to be listed as ahci for it to work in Mint.

Code: Select all

I am asking on a Acer forum why I can't select that SATA MODE line in the BIOS. The Information tab doesn't allow selection of the items listed. The other tabs do. Somewhere along the line when I was doing stuff months before recent updates I set the BIOS to be password protected and I have to enter a password every time I open the BIOS. I wonder if it also effects some of the ability to change settings, although I can change other settings in the BIOS. If I learn about that I'll report back here.

I thought I had a second physical SSD but there is nothing else in the drop-down list in the upper right of GParted. Maybe I misunderstood what the guy told me that sold me the laptop.

Some manufacturers make it really difficult to the point where you would be reasonable in assuming it was malicious. Do you have an ability to set an admin password in BIOS, that seems to unlock and make visible a number of options?

Pretty sure you need to disable optane which was showing in one of your earlier screenshots. If you do, win may not boot. This may or may not help:
https://support.cyberpowerpc.com/hc/en- ... el-Optane-
and this is what to do in win to enable it to boot with sata set AHCI:

Some Acers require a Supervisory password to get access to all functions. I believe that would be different from the password you are describing.

I compared the info in your GParted screenshot and the screenshot you made from Windows. You do have Mint on one disk and Windows on the other disk.

The sda drive in GParted corresponds to Disk 1 (based on the size of the drive). The part of Disk 1 which says "Healthy (Primary Partition)" is your Mint install.

I do not know why GParted would not be able to see Disk 0 which contains your Windows operating system. (You do have a Windows data partition on the same drive as your Mint install, so Windows is, in essence, using both drives.)

Pretty sure it's sata mode set RST, only one drive shows up in the OP's blkid output. Same issue as this:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=362394&p=2103056#p2103056
and I don't have a fix.

I learned in an Acer forum that in the BIOS while in the Main tab if I hit CNTL+S it brings up a SATA Mode setting entry that I can select. I changed it from Optain with RAID to ACHI.

With it set to ACHI it does launch Mint and without the 1.5 minute delay, so that's great. Problem solved, with Linux. And with ACHI set I in GParted I see the other drive:
2021-12-02_20-49.jpg
But, now Windows doesn't load, as warned in the post above. So now that I know how to get to the SATA mode setting in the BIOS, I'll try that.

I have it working.

I now have the BIOS set to AHCI and Mint boots without the 1.5 min timeout AND Win10 can also boot.

In the link provided above it showed how to disable Optain in Windows using the Intel Storage Technology app in Windows10.
https://support.cyberpowerpc.com/hc/en- ... el-Optane-

But when I was in the app I saw this
Intel Rapid Storage - not enabled.jpg
Intel Rapic Storage system view.jpg
So I did nothing and proceeded on to the next link.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233623 ... st-systems

Right-click the Windows Start Menu. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
If you don’t see Command Prompt listed, it’s because you have already been updated to a later version of Windows. If so, use this method instead to get to the Command Prompt:
Click the Start Button and type cmd
Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
If this command does not work for you, try bcdedit /set safeboot minimal
Restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup (the key to press varies between systems).
Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE or RAID (again, the language varies).
Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
If you had to try the alternate command above, you will likely need to do so here also: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot
Reboot once more and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.

That appears to have worked.

Both Mint and Win10 now load.

Only thing left regarding booting is that I have lost the boot manager and have to go into the BIOS to change whether I boot to Linux or Win10. How can I get that back?

Re: timeout found during boot - updated with gparted screenshot

It could be as simple as going into BIOS and making sure that 'ubuntu' is at the top of your boot list.

When you boot into mint, if you don't get a grub menu giving you the choice of mint or win, then in a terminal sudo update-grub. It should find win and next time you boot give you the menu.
I learned in an Acer forum that in the BIOS while in the Main tab if I hit CNTL+S it brings up a SATA Mode setting entry that I can select. I changed it from Optain with RAID to ACHI.
That is a very useful tip for other Acer users, this issue is bound to come up again. Thanks. Could you go back to your first post and click the edit button (the one with a pencil) and change the title to something like "Acer disabling Optane/RST". Search facilities on the forum are not good and this would make it easier to find in the future.
