No display during or after boot [SOLVED]

Hey there! Recently downloaded mint, but after restarting it I noticed that I had no display. The computer turned on (I could hear it) but no dice on seeing anything. My GPU is fine, and the only fix I’ve found so far is clearing the CMOS. could it be that I need to download drivers for it to even boot correctly? Otherwise, I love that shut off sound. So satisfying.

Give us a little more info. What is the make, model and GPU in that machine.
We would be just shooting in the dark with the info you have provided. No the CMOS is not usually at fault.
Quite often it is the GPU and it's drivers. Especially if it's Nvidia.

Well, just as an update, by replacing the cmos battery like I mentioned I can boot into Linux just fine, however it eventually freezes with the keyboard not working, yet the mouse does. After this I have to reset the cmos again.

Sorry for the Late reply been busy here.
At this point I think I would try a newer kernel and see that works.
Try 5.13 which is available via update manager.
click on update manager Then View then kernels. install 5.13. and reboot.

Please update your system. A fresh install only has the files from when the ISO was originally made so updates are needed. Cinnamon, muffin, Xorg and a lot of other files have newer versions which are not showing as installed on your system.

Currently running my second set of updates after a kernel update, and I think I might’ve found one potential issue. While I was updating, I ran into a segmentation fault and the display fully froze. Im going to take out a stick of ram (it’s a different type than the rest) and see what that does.
Considering it’s still freezing after a fresh install of mint, a hardware issue isn’t out of the picture, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a memory problem.

Fair enough. Frankly this isn’t my first issue with memory faults either, had some in windows but they usually just were fixed with drivers. Maybe asking my MOBO to provide for two differing voltages of memory wasn’t a good move in the end! I’m just going to try removing everything that isn’t necessary (my two other hard drives, my network adapter, that memory stick, etc) and seeing how that fares. Check what I can easily check before getting into the weeds. Either way, I’m going to boot linux in a stable manner eventually, regardless of how much kicking and screaming my PC might throw at me!

Update: removed some memory, and now it seems to be working well enough. The display is currently frozen, but my keyboard is still on and my mouse is still moving, so I’m going to leave it be. This is the longest it’s been stable for so far, so I’m just going to assume asking it to download two different things while running a full bleachbit clean in the background is just taxing.


Edit: tried ctrl alt f1 and that hid my mouse, so it very well might just be a display thing. I’ll reboot and see if I can download some new drivers for my card.

Bleachbit can cause issues. I hope you took a Timeshift snapshot before starting it.

It may be a power issue with the amdgpu driver which could need a kernel parameter. I suggest holding off on downloading new drivers for your card.

What exactly is the issue you are currently in relation to the display? The data you posted earlier indicates the drivers are installed. (AMD provides the drivers which come in the kernel.)

As for the timeshift, frankly making a backup completely slipped my mind. Worst case scenario isn’t awful here though since there really isn’t anything on this installation except a few updates. I’ll be sure to be more careful in the future, though!

That sounds like an issue which would show up in logs.

What are you doing when it "freezes"? Are you switching to a TTY or terminal and rebooting?

That is a safe way to do it. If you are rebooting then I would think we could get the last boot log to see what is happening. Run the following in a terminal:

journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999

It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which had the display freeze) in reverse order (so the reason for the freeze should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.

I want to start with some of the inxi output you provided. In the Graphics section the display resolution is listed as tty: N/A. Often that means you are running the monitor at a resolution other than its preferred resolution. Are you doing that? Maybe that is part of the graphics issue?

The repo list in that inxi output is showing the AMD drivers from their website. Did you try to add those drivers? There is an error line in the log which would seem to indicate that you might have.

This bug report Run ROCm with two AMD GPU's #1168 seems to indicate this issue could be related to the motherboard (if the GPU does have the atomics). I thought ROCm was only part of the AMD pro drivers package.

This bug report PCI rejecting atomics on a Radeon RX580 supported chipset #722 mentions the open-source repository for ROCm. That would also be an additional install.

Hm, the display WAS running slightly off (59.9999~ hz instead of 60) but I doubt that was the issue. As for the drivers, I haven’t installed any off the amd website, no. Especially not ROCm— this is my first encounter with that term in any sense, much less on my own system!
