Is there not an earlier version, such as the Nvidia-340, available in Update Manager?

Re: New user having random boot issues
Well there's a definite difference using the 340 driver. I've restarted/shut down/restarted a dozen or so times and I'm yet to have an error. The 340 driver also shows an Nvidia splash screen before getting to the login screen which the 390 doesn't. I'll give it a few more days to be certain then mark this post as solved.

I would not have guessed it would work better, but glad to hear that seems to be the case. Keep us posted as your results may help others in the future.

Re: New user having random boot issues
Just had my first boot failure since Thursday.
I had been using the Win11 system and had a crash that necessitated powering off by just holding in the power button. When I switched back on, it went to straight to Windows without Grub2 even showing to give me the choice of which OS to boot. I restarted from the Win power options button, Grub2 kicked in upon rebooting but the boot failed as per my original issue. Pushed the reset button and this time Mint started perfectly. Coming to the conclusion that I might be better off just reconfiguring this box as a Linux only machine.

Re: New user having random boot issues
When you power off the system by holding the power button you risk corrupting data on the disks which can include data/info on the boot sectors.

Re: New user having random boot issues
I wont panic just yet then
Seriously thinking about putting an SSD in and taking out the Win11 drive, I've put my other PC over to Win11 after a fair bit of testing so I have no reason to keep the dual boot system going. I haven't got a huge amount of stuff installed on Mint so I reckon I'll just go for a clean install as I simply don't understand what I've read about moving my existing installation over.
