Internal/USB keyboard not detected ONLY during GRUB screen, Linux Mint 20.x

Post by swnw »

Hi,

I am struggling with the same problem without results. My computer is the Huawei Mate Book Pro laptop. So far I reinstalled LinuxMint 20.04 and Elementery OS 6 and keyboad still doesn't respond. I can't move between menu. Grub 2.04 started with default System highlighted (LinuxMint for examole) and run it after 10 sek.
But yesterday I got idea I have old PC with Microsoft radio keyboard, so connected it to the laptop and the Grub revive and with this keyboard works as it should . So I have a plan to buy small only numeric radio keyboard and use it when it's necessary.
But I'm still not happy with solution.

This isn't uncommon for some things, my bluetooth keyboard won't be available until after boot. And my usb mouse won't but a usb keyboard will. I think there may be problems even with some USB keyboards. But I think it's surprising even a laptop keyboard isn't recognized. After working during the bios boot. My first thought is, when you boot up, check in System Settings for the "driver manager". I suspect there still could be a hardware driver that may need to be installed.

Maybe also post the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
so we can see what the hardware is, and what drivers are being used.

Since it works elsewhere though, I guess it's also possible that there's a grub module that might need to be loaded, or configuration setting changed.

I did not notice anything suspicious but I did an experiment. I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on external old Samsung SSD 120 GB and Elementary 6.0 on Samsung Portable SSD T5. The same story I can see Grub 2.04 screen and which looks like frozen but you can see running seconds from 10 to 0 than Grub starts first default system. More USB pendrive from which I installed Elementary 6.0 starts the same way - first frozen than starts system but I can't chose Try Option, only after system run I can chose Try. But both distros works perfectly with my old radio keyboard.

Supplement

The situation is still unsolved but I found kind of the workaround. I bought Mini Wireless Keyboard H20 2.4 GHz and I was sure that problem will disappear alas after I connected dongle and started Linux Mint 20.3 I found frozen Grub screen again.
So after intensive search I discover working keyboard shortcuts - arrows on this keyboard don't work on Grub screen but Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts do.
Ctrl p is up
Ctrl n is down
Ctrl b left
Ctrl f right
and Enter is F it's mine discovery
Using this shortcuts I can move around the Grub screen easily and run what I want. What a relief :). Besides this keyboard works fluently with PC and laptop without shortcuts - tested. And probably with android smartphone or smart TV - not tested.
