Cannot boot from Windows USB Flash

Post by Feedi »

Sorry if this topic is offtopic.

I have linux mint.
I've written windows 10 on my usb flash and went to boot menu, I tried to boot from USB Flash Memory (i choose legacy mode!)
Then I got this error on the black screen

Code: Select all

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)
This product is covered by one or more of the following patents: US6,570,884, US6,115,776 and US6,327,625

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1.38 (06/16/15)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

 PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE-ROM.
Then it launches Linux Mint again.

How do i solve it please? I will answer every your question, as I can.

Maybe the CSM is disabled in the UEFI, hence why you can't boot from a "legacy mode" install media.

How did you burn the usb stick? If you used mint's usb image writer it won't work.

That warning has nothing to be with USB but PXE-ROM (boot to LAN with CSM/Legacy mode enabled).

It is worth to keep CSM/Legacy support disabled if it is possible as per UEFI settings interface. Also check boot order in UEFI settings and be sure USB HD is your first (default) boot option, set PXE boot to LAN to disable and also IPV4 PXE First if any.

Then it will depend on the way you've created that USB and want to install Windows.
If want to install in BIOS legacy mode set boot mode to Legacy support and/or legacy first in Boot Prority (see here) then If that USB is not shown that's is a wrong installation media.

if you want to install Windows in UEFI mode, then boot mode should be UEFI and Secure Boot should be disabled. If you can not boot that USB in such way it would be a wrong installation media too.
