Hello everybody,

For some time now my setup has been Archlinux on a seperate HDD and Linux Mint/Windows Dual Boot on my In-Laptop SSD.
At some point I decided to fully commit to Linux and remove my Windows, as well as my previous Mint install. I did a fresh install and am now greeted with "No bootable device". I can follow basic directions, but don't yet now too much about boot problems.

Kind Regards

Please confim Secure boot and Fast/quick boot are disabled in UEFI settings interface (AKA Computer settings, AKA BIOS setup,...). Also confirm there is no Ubuntu option in boot order neither in boot menu (see this)

Then post back following codes result

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l
sudo blkid
mokutil --sb-state
sudo efibootmgr -v

(Edited) Didn't notice you say you have removed Windows.

Secure boot is disabled, fast/quick boot is not an option anywhere. Ubuntu is not in Bootmenu or list of boot order.

It is strange you can not find Ubuntu boot option looking at efibootmgr result.

You can remove all those Unknown Device entries and also Fedora, Linux Boot Manager and Pop!_OS. To remove Boot0002, by example, just run

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr -b 2 -B
Repeat those codes changing boot number as needed sudo efibootmgr -b 3 -B...

If you have installed but never booted with new Mint after installing, I doubt that Boot0006 (default) is right. In any case you can reinstall grub-efi and recreate that boot option doing as indicated here but replacing sda5 with sda2 and sda2 with sda1 in codes.

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/
modprobe efivars
sudo chroot /mnt
apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64
exit
I would include another one code before exit only to be sure (sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda), any way after exit unmount and reboot.

Code: Select all

 for i in /sys /proc /dev/pts /dev; do sudo umount /mnt$i; done
sudo umount /mnt/boot/efi
sudo umount /mnt
sudo reboot

If you can not boot after reinstalling then you will need to do something else as creating an Ubuntu boot option directly in your UEFI interface,.. but you should remember if you've needed to do it before...

I think we're getting close. Followed the steps, but got an Error at apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64
and then followed with sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda which also gave an error.

Re: No Bootable Device Acer

Post by Reddog1 »

It's possible that you have one of the Insyde BIOS that requires that the efi bootloader be 'Trusted' before it will be added to the Boot options. The place to do that is in the bios under the 'Security' header, and a bios password must be set in order to access it. Once you log on with the bios password some grayed out options will be accessible and one of the options is to search for a trusted bootloader. If that is the case, the search should find the efi for ubuntu and it can be added.

You should post back all codes result to be sure what's happened.

You did not remove all previous boot option with efibootmgr (at least Boot009 was left). It is not clear to me the way you have installed new Mint and if you were able to boot before with such system. If it is not you'd better install from scracht.

In other hand it looks like previous Mint and other systems were intalled with Secure Boot enabled. If you can boot Linux MInt Live with Secure Boot enabled you will need to reinstall grub-efi-signed. Only change sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64 with sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64-signed shim-signed in codes.

If you get dependencies problem as before consider running sudo apt-get install -f or remove all grub package before reinstalling (look here purge and reinstal in chroot for UEFI systems).

Try copying /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/shimx64.efi to /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/BOOTx64.EFI and /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi to /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/grubx64.efi .

I did remove that.

Boot2001* EFI USB Device	RC
Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM	RC
Boot2003* EFI Network	RC
mint@mint:~$
Until I decided to remove Windows along my previous Mint install, everything worked fine. Since then, no Linux install has worked.
Secure Boot is disabled and I did do my fresh installation without it being enabled. Also it is disabled right now, while I'm on Linux Mint Live.

Should I still run the new command?

You should look at https://askubuntu.com/a/630662/300665 as it seems those Acers need some changes made in BIOS/UEFI settings

(Sidenote: Why is it, that it all worked with dual boot but is broken now.. damn acer)
I folloowed the steps, it now boots into grub menu but then doesnt start and shows this:

Code: Select all

error: /boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-74-generic has invalid signature
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Press any key to continue...
I have a photo, but I don't know how to attach it here

You might want to try advanced options in grub and boot into an older kernel

There is no other kernel, only the same one in "recovery mode".
It then shows the same error

Again, did you log in to the bios with a bios password, and look in the bios 'security' section for a place to 'enable trusted boot loader' (or similar)?

Another non-bootable Acer:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=362629
In this case the 5.13 kernel seemed to fix it, but we have had other Acer posts where it didn't.

It seems that the whole Acer brand has this problem. I struggled for a long time to install LM18 on Acer TravelMate-117, but I found a working solution. I install LM in the standard UEFI BIOS mode without changing anything. I restart the system after installation and re-enter the BIOS. I change the Legacy and set the charge 1. USB; 2.HDD. I remember and restart. The system loads normally and the LM works without a problem. If I restart again and change the UEFI boot, I get the message 'No boot device'.
I installed LM19 and 20 in the same way and it always works. :D
