Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Greetings.
I've installed LM20.1 on a usb drive with lots of room on it 200Gb.
The system works fine once loaded but the issue is the time it takes to load. For some reason once you select the entry at Grub (using legacy bios) the computer just sits there for at least five minutes. It's as if something is being loaded. Then all of a sudden the loading process starts. If indeed the kernel is being loaded to ram can this be turned off and just be read to memory as needed? I'm not sure what else it could be...

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
You might narrow it down a little with:
though this will likely just confirm that the delay is with either the bootloader or the kernel.
Code: Select all
systemd-analyze

Thanks for the reply.
This is my response.
This is my response.
linuxmint-GA-770T-USB3:~$ systemd-analyze

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Well it's not only the kernel. So try:
and also see if there are any serious errors being logged by the kernel:
Code: Select all
systemd-analyze critical-chain
systemd-analyze blame
Code: Select all
journalctl -b -k -p 3

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Thank you for all the replies to this issue.
Sorry about the delay in responding...I found the messages in the spam folder of which I'm hoping has been remedied now.
So here is my output on the requested codes...unfortunately my last boot went a little faster than usual and may not represent what is going on anymore.

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Is that USB drive connected to a USB2 or USB3 port? It won't make a lot of difference because regardless of the drive's read/write capabilities, you're limited by the throughput of the USB port. I realize that it doesn't account for your extremely long boot time. It's just something you should be aware of.I've installed LM20.1 on a usb drive with lots of room on it 200Gb.

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Thanks for the reply Larry. You were right. The partition was on a drive plugged into usb2. I had a LM 18 on the 200Gb drive and the 20.1 on a 160gb partition on a separate usb. I mistook the numbers. When I tried swapping to the usb3 I got a 'cannot get C/H/S values' error. I need to load the kernel first.
However the LM 18 is a 32bit version I use on my laptop as well but it doesn't take as long to load whether in usb2 or 3 as you mentioned above...there is a difference but I don't get the ACPI error.
Perhaps I should start over and try reinstalling while in usb3 mode. It may make a difference.

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
You can probably ignore the ACPI Errror. That's a firmware issue with those Gigabyte motherboards, but doesn't seem to affect anything. But a lot of them give that error. The floppy disk error in the end could be slowing things down some, though. If your system doesn't have any floppy disk drive, could try disabling floppy disk support in the bios. That worked for one user here.
Beyond that, the ~45s boot time is probably about normal for those systems. The 5 minutes is definitely not normal. If you get the longer boot time again, run the systemd-analyze commands and the journalctl command again, and see what has changed.

Re: Grub hangs at boot for five minutes
Thanks for the reply acerm. I haven't seen the acpi error before...perhaps iit s showing up in kernel 5? I will look into the floppy situation when I return home again. I thought I disabled it.
