No Splash Icon on Boot - Mint 20.2 Cinnamon

Post by MintMan20204 »

I recently installed Mint 20.2 Cinnamon and after installing it I do not get an initial spinning splash screen logo on boot up. It only shows on shut down. I don't recall what kernel upgrade did this but there was a kernel change and install toward the end of the install that was forced by the OS that I think took over and stopped it from showing. Is there any way to get the splash icon to show on power up regardless of what Kernel I am on?

Welcome to the forum, MintMan20204.

We need to know more about your system to have an idea of what might be happening. Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Some people with Nvidia GPUs have this issue, but you do not.

We will have to see if someone else might have ideas why it is not showing during boot up.

Taking "quiet splash" out of the GRUB for troubleshooting revealed the error for me on this:

VGACON disables amdgpu kernel modesetting

I've seen others now on further research say that this text should resolve it when added to a line in GRUB but I am not sure what line or where: amdgpu.dc=0

That message usually means you are either booting in Recovery Mode or you have the nomodeset kernel parameter in grub.

I've never seen that message relate to amdgpu.dc=0.

I checked my grub file and didn't see nomodeset anywhere in it and didn't use recovery on boot at all just typical boot.

And if you run inxi -Gx it shows your graphics drivers are installed properly (ie. amdgpu is installed and the renderer is Radeon RX 580 Series)?

If so, that does not correlate with the message you posted.

I went and researched the kernel parameter you posted and that only applied to much older kernel versions (early 4 series kernels). The settings in the kernel have changed since then.

It was weird I tried to just go back to a 5.4 kernel to work on resolving a different issue I am having with the 5.13 kernel and now on 5.4 it periodically will show the logo on boot sometimes but wont other times.

Also, I got it to work 100% of the time by just adding "splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash" but I wonder why it requires this to show it.
