Blank screen with AMD Radeon Video Card

Post by Toorakable »

Last year I replaced my really old Gigabyte Nvidia card with another older AMD card that was still considerably better than what I had. I had been running various Linux distros without many issues with the Nvidia card. The switch to AMD though has been painful - I had been using Mint with no issues but since the AMD 'upgrade' I get blank screens on boot up and can only ever run it in recovery mode. The other day I upgraded to Una and low and behold I could boot up with full graphics. At least I could for about 2 days following which I was suddenly back to a blank screen again. Modifying Grub did nothing to help. I have searched in vain for a solution. Following is my desktop PC system. Any suggestions gratefully received!

vendor: Gigabyte driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.1 128 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.3.0-devel
This means that the correct driver is not being used, and you are not getting proper graphical hardware acceleration.

I think one of, or all of, these are the problem. You installed some third party GPU drivers (possibly multiple ones on top of each other). Consider uninstalling all of that and stick with the kernel drivers. AMD cards are different than Nvidia. They usually don't require third-party drivers and work best with the kernel drivers.

Did you remove all the Nvidia driver files before installing the AMD card?

What modifications to grub are you making?

It was a clean install following NVIDIA so yes those files are gone. This issue is present for every distro I have tried over the last 6 months. POP for example wont even boot into setup, yet all the distros are meant to have the AMD drivers incorporated and ready to go. I run Kbuntu and by including amdgpu.dc=0 into Grub I got that to boot but with Mint - nothing. Thanks for your reply.

Sorry just realised there was a reply about the 3rd party drivers. Good point thank you - in desperation I started installing those because right out of the box with a clean install about 6 months ago Mint failed to boot correctly with the AMD card. Cheers

Run ls /etc/modprobe.d/ to see if there is an amdgpu blacklist file. That file has been known to not always remove when the AMD pro driver is removed.

Have you tried using amdgpu.dpm=0?

Please also check to make sure both ends of the cable for your monitor are secure. If you are using an HDMI connection, it does not take much of a misalignment to mess up the signal and give a black screen.

No joy with your alternative Grub suggestion and yes its never been a cable issues and sure isnt now. Ive decided to revert to a NVIDIA card as obviously this AMD one just doesn't play nice and I am a bit over spending countless hours trying to problem solve it.

Thanks for your support

Hi back again after being caught up in my return to work. With a recent kernel upgrade and adding amdgpu.dc=0 I can now successfully boot normally and the graphics appear to be okay. Following is the new system report - I am unsure how to interpret it so any enlightenment would be great thanks.

I am not sure either because it is not what is normally seen.

The first part looks good. Both drivers are installed from the kernel.

Device-1: AMD RS880 [Radeon HD 4290] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: radeon v: kernel bus ID: 01:05.0 chip ID: 1002:9714

Device-2: AMD Tonga XT / Amethyst XT [Radeon R9 380X / R9 M295X] vendor: Gigabyte driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 02:00.0 chip ID: 1002:6938

This next part is odd because only the display drivers for the HD4290 loaded. Normally, drivers for both it and the Radeon R9 380 would load.

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: ati,radeon unloaded: amdgpu,fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1440x900~60Hz

This next part is odd in light of what was in the previous section. Normally, the GPU which renders is one which has their display drivers loaded. This is the GPU with the display driver unloaded.

OpenGL: renderer: AMD Radeon R9 380 Series (TONGA DRM 3.42.0 5.14.0-1022-oem LLVM 12.0.0) v: 4.6 Mesa 21.2.6 direct render: Yes

We will need to get more info to determine what is happening. X Server runs the graphics in Linux Mint. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

What is the output of cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Normally, this should return no file found, but let's see what is on your system.
