There is a better tool for flashing to USBs, try using this instead

I've used both. For Windows and Macs, it's BalenaEtcher--hands down.

Thanks for all the responses. I tried etcher and the "process" would just repeat itself; i.e., I followed the directions selecting the necessary buttons, etc. and in etcher the I would continuously receive an error message that the flash drive wasn't able to finish the process.

Use a different usb drive. Not all drives are created equal--and some require more voltage than the usb port on an older machine can supply, too. A bad/incompatible usb drive appears to be your problem......

Try changing the USB port too.

Thank you friends for the quick responses. I highly appreciate it.
If not the USB drive/port, what other suggestions might you good people have?

I changed the physical USB stick and used a different port. Magic, and the install began. However, I got to a step that requests various options.
"Erase disk and install Ubuntu", or " something else"
and
request for "device for boot loader installation".
Thanks for the responses

Since you only want Linux on your computer, and since you only have one hard drive, the easiest option is "erase disk and install Ubuntu'. Mint is Ubuntu-based, so the installer is the Ubuntu installer. The default install is a single "/" (root) partition for everything.

With only a single hard drive (sda), the default place for the 'boot' is /dev/sda
