[SOLVED] Mint 20 crashes

Post by Chriske »

Installed Mint20 a few weeks back.
Before I had 18.3, it was rocksolid, never had any problems whit that version.
Now almost every day Mint20 freezes, nothing I can do expect pushing the button ans restart.
I have no idea how to solve this. What's happening, can someone help me please.

Your hardware list suggests the machine is four years old. That is old enough for Linux kernels and drivers to have all updates while still young enough that nothing has dropped out of the code. The memory usage suggests you ran the list after a reboot.

You can use the command dmesg to list error messages after a crash. You can browse syslog. Is there a pattern to the crashes? Something like opening tab 895 in Chrome or plugging in a USB disk?

LM 20 does more and can create more activity which means more heat and more disk activity. Check CPU and disk temperatures after running for a while. Clean out the fans to restore maximum cooling. In Cinnamon, switch effects off to reduce CPU usage. Make one change each day and report back what works.

A nearly full system disk can cause this type of problem and yours looks like it is not full. A nearly full boot partition can cause the problem and deleting unused kernels is the first step to clean up a boot partition.

How long before a freeze? What is running at that time?

Laptop is 4 years old indeed, but hardly used. So warming up due to dust in fan can not be the case.

As a matter of fact cleaning all laptops in the house is a yearly routine. Everytime again when I'm at it I always ask myself, why oh why is it that almost all inner parts of a laptop must be removed before the fan can be reached and cleaned. In laptop design it must be very easy to install a sliding mechanism for that fan, so nothing more than one or two screws to slide out the fan. Get rid of the wiring and make three contact points for that fan...sigh ...anyway...

I'll keep track of activity when a crash occurs.

Thanks

Not sure right now, I have the impression when on line (Firefox) that the crashed do occur.
So closing Firefox right now and waiting...

Far less crashes, and the last couple of weeks hardly...
Has it to do with updates...?. we'll see...

last weeks no more crashes at all.
Expect for the regular Mint updates nothing has changed at all.
So most probably these Mint updates solved my problems.
