Helena can't see sata drive

Post by dohcacr »

I'm trying to install Helena but, the install partitioner can't see the sata drive. Tried the compatibility mode, still no help. If I boot the live cd and launch gparted, I can see the sata drive and all of it's partition, but the install partitioner seem to have a blind spot for my sata drive. I could use some suggestions.

That is strange. I have a mixture of SATA and IDE, and I think it saw them all. Did you select the fourth option, the manual partitioning?

Yes, I used the manual partitioning option and saw no drives or partitions at all. Gparted see them all.

I have a similar problem with my install. I first installed on an IDE drive and partition found the drive and installed correctly. I then disconnected IDE and tried to install on a SATA drive. After selecting keyboard, time zone etc the partition tool does not see the SATA drive so I can't proceed any further with install. Any help would be great

Just for the sake of comparison, what kind of motherboard are you using. Mine is a Biostar Tforce6100-939.

Just in case you didn't recognise it my board uses AMD chips also. 3800+ I believe. The sata controller uses a nforce 410 chip set.

I am not sure what SATA controller is on motherboard, but I had no problems with Gloria. It would be interesting if anyone else is having the same problem with other types of motherboard. I hope this is sorted soon. Thanks for all the help

I ran Gloria without any problems also. The problem is with the "new partitioner" in Helena. Gloria used gparted. If you boot the Helena livecd, and launch gparted, I think you will see your sata disk, despite the fact that the "new partitioner" can't see the disk. It would be nice if someone could tell us how to call gparted for the installation partitioner.

I am having the exact same problem.... Gloria's installer worked fine, Helena's doesn't see 2 out of 4 sata HDDs. Gigabyte mobo with Intel chipset ICH9 I think. Sticking with Mint 7 I guess, unless OEM install is good. Gparted, or cfdisk shows the drives just fine.

Yes, we need a fix for this, ;)

Thanks,

breaker

EDIT: There is a ubiquity bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/459054

EDIT: I manually updated ubiquity (et al) using the .deb packages from Ubuntu, and I got it up to 2.0.10, but still no dice.

I have four drives in this computer, two IDE and two SATA. Ran the installation procedure for Mint 8 again up to the partitioning selection step, and all four drives, sda, b, c, and d are shown.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA GA-M51GM-S2G. An AMD board.

I have no idea why the Ubiquity development team stopped using Gparted, it seemed to work well except for taking a long time to scan for all of the drives.

Maybe they will fix the bug and the fix will make it into Mint eventually. Until then I won't be able to install Helena. :(

Thanks,

Hi
It seems I have a similar problem. Gparted sees both SATA drives. However Helena install would only see drive sdb, not the drive I wanted as I have Gloria installed on that one. The Gloria install disk can see drive sda as well as sdb as does Mepis 8. Very confusing. Also, I use a Starlogic M17CNA tft - not recognised by Helena/Ubuntu 910 and xorg.conf is missing in this edition. Hmmm ... I think I'll wait 6mths, too.

Re: Helena can't see sata drive SOLVED

I think I have found a solution

It worked for me

Insert Mint CD and start a live session
Launch a Terminal (Menu Terminal) and type sudo apt-get remove dmraid

When asked 'do you want to continue' type y and click enter
Close the Terminal and click 'Install' on the desktop to continue with the install

Hope this helps

I had similar problems when I had a mixture of IDE and SATA drives using Legacy Grub to boot. I took the easy way out and standardised on IDE drives and no more probs. The difficulty seems to be with Grub and the bios seeing different names for the drives and booting in a different order. I think this is one of the problems Grub2 is meant to address with the use of UUIDs to find the partitions. However at the moment that is a disaster in a multiboot system. See my thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=37435.

Elegant solution. Worked perfectly, and then the install screwed up Grub.

Thanks sportbike

@tonyapp, I think that is true, if you can get the uuid to work right... I found a bug report about "--search" with UUID which is solved by newer versions of grub2, supposedly.

I did do as suggested, and removed dmraid, and then I was able to install Helena, thanks.
