[SOLVED] screen resolution on ASUS UX325E

Post by Jmf »

Hello,
I have a new laptop ASUS UX325E (GPU Intel Iris Xe)
I tried mint 20.3 MATE with a live USB boot before installing it to verify the compatibility.
the main functionalities seems to be OK, but I notice somthing annoying: in the display menu the screen is "not detected" and the resolution is set at 800x600. no other choice.
I installed several times Mint on other laptops and I think It's the first time I have this display issue. Is it something that can happen during live USB and that could be fixed after the real installation?
because I saw some reviews of Ubuntu installations on this laptop and they didn't tell about that.

Welcome to the forum, Jmf.

You have not provided the information requested in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help!, but given what I know about the 5.4 kernel and your hardware, it sounds like there is no graphics driver installed.

You could install LM20.3 MATE and then boot into Recovery Mode which disables all graphics drivers. Then using Update Manager you can install the 5.13 kernel which has the Intel driver. After that, you should be able to boot normally and get the correct graphics resolution.

hello,
so I installed 20.3 MATE. At the first startup it was always with 800x600 resolution.
I've done all the required system updates, and after the second startup the resolution passed to 1920x1080 without another action. I'm still with the 5.4 kernel.
The screen is "unknown" and I don't have another resolution choice but It seems OK. Will I have a benefit passing to 5.13?
the HW acceleration seems to be active. a little glxgears test shows 3200FPS

Yes, there will be a benefit. The graphics drivers will install and your system will not be running in software rendering (llvmpipe) mode. Hardware acceleration is not active. You will also likely have additional resolutions and frequencies available for your screen.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9a49
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa compositor: marco v: 1.26.0
resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

hello,
I installed the 5.13 kernel.
So the screen is not unknown anymore and there's a lot of resolution choices.
Also I can now modify the OLED screenlight that was at only at maximum level before
thank you for your help
