New kernel 5.13.0-41 does not boot [SOLVED]

Post by msau »

Hello
I boot without problem with 5.13.0-40 but the 5.13.0.41 update seems frozen in initram, in either normal and recovery mode.
I see nothing in journalctl (no entry added in --list-boot)
I use 5.13 instead of normal 5.4 for the kernel to recognize the embedded graphic in CPU.
I waited a week but thre is no new kenel in update repository.
I got the kernel with normal update. And tried to download and reinstall with apt-get.
I have no problem with 5.13.0.40 but I'd prefer to have an up to date kernel.
My system infos are:

The thumb rule is use the one which works for you, taking care to install the latest working kernel.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

Welcome to the forum, msau.

Try using Update Manager to remove and re-install.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click 5.13.0-41 on the right panel. If it is installed, a "Remove" button will appear.
  • Remove the kernel and expand the pane to watch for any error messages.
  • Click on 5.13.0-41 again and an "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel (watch for any error messages) then reboot for it to become active.

Thanks for answers.
I had reinstall via apt-get.
I tried again to reinstall via update manager.
Same result: frozen in initramfs with no entry in journalctl

Can only report that 5.13.0-41 works fine here on a few machines and that I'm not finding anything seemingly related out on the web either. That as such the issue seems fairly specific to your system.

In that sense: you are running the F10 BIOS and I see there's an F13 at https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B5 ... rt-dl-bios. If you can I'd update and see...

Did you completely remove the kernel before you tried re-installing by either method or did you just re-install?

Yes I removed the kernel before reinstalling.
And I have the same problem with the new 5.13.0.44 kernel.
I am quite sure the problem is something in initrd.
Where can I file a bug report for the kernel?
Best regards

I have no guesses as to what might be happening. I've not see others mentioning any issues with these kernels.

In Update Manager, select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. With 5.13 selected in the left pane, you should see the 5.13 kernels listed in the right pane. Click on the one for which you want to submit a bug report. It expands to make several links visible. Click the Bug reports link. It brings up a page with the bugs which have already been submitted. The "Report a Bug" button is on the right side of the page near the top.

Well It is not a kernel problem.
I took some time and used SuperGrub2 and the kernel 5.13.0-41 or -46 boot fine.
It is probably some problem with grub or update-grub
I tried to used the grub edit mode to do the same thing in my grub.cfg I must lack some insmod or variable because I can't make it works. And there is not enough room is the console to view all the results of lsmod
When entering grub commands manually grub freeze without output when entering the initrd command.
How can I duplicate what is done in SuperGrub ?
Are the version of grub the same in supergrub and Linux Mint ?
I have found some old report of initrd freeze but without solution except an update and I think I am uptodate.

 The file that says in uppercase letters at the very top "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE"? That is the file you were trying to edit? Please leave that file alone.

I am not familiar with SuperGrub2.

Re: New kernel 5.13.0-41 does not boot SOLVED

Post by msau »

(I modify grub.cfg through update-grub)

After some reinstall and dichotomy I found the problem.
the packet grub2-theme-mint is the culprit.
grub initrd freeze even with a brand new verion (1.2.2) and anything works fine when I delete /boot/grub/theme. I will do without.
So I marked the post solved.
Thanks for your help.

Hopefully that means you modify /etc/default/grub and then when you run sudo update-grub that updates /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Glad you were finally able to resolve the issue. :)
