[SOLVED] Laptop does not properly shut down after updates..

Post by Esnes_llun »

Before downloading all updates my laptop worked fine which is an Asus ZenBook 13 the one with the screenpad. Anyways when I shut down the computer I get a long message and at the end it says Linux fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed. When I select suspend it's fine but the shut down requires to push the power button until it shuts down on the screen with the error message. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

Not a solution but just a heads up
In situations like this first try the graceful reboot.
Press ctrl+prtscn--release prtscn but continue holdiing ctrl---enter the following keyboard sequence:
r e i s u b
Much better than a (dangerous) hard poweroff.
In most of these situations we want a reboot. But if you want a power down
then enter
r e i s u o

Minor correction, but not irrelevant:
It is is <alt><sysreq> r e i s u b and <alt><sysreq> r e i s u o, no <ctrl> key involved.
I am pretty sure it is this way, because I used <alt><sysreq> r e i s u b only 2 days ago, when I had managed to make a live system stop reacting on any other keyboard input.
And this very old blog from 2008 also mentions <alt><sysreq> r e i s u b and <alt><sysreq> r e i s u o: REISUB - the gentle Linux restart

Welcome to the forum, Esnes_llun.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware. We need to know that in order to be able to help you.

yes karlchen is correct 100 percent.
Yes use the alt button--i'm like double ds here

It's also sysreq rather than prtscn, for me anyway.

Your system has a 10th-gen Intel CPU. The 5.4 kernel is too old to have proper support for it. That's one reason your computer's CPU temperature is on the high side. Please upgrade to the 5.13 kernel.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
 • Open Update Manager.
 • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
 • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
 • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Please let us know if the newer kernel I suggested clears your issue.

Good to hear. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.
