<SOLVED>Live USB won't connect to the internet
Hi all,
I have recently upgraded to a new PC. I used to be able to use Linux Mint live without installing it, just booting a live USB and playing around with it. Now I find I can boot into Linux Mint but there is no network connection at all.
Why is my live USB not connecting to any network on the new PC? Does it make a difference that before I had a HDD but my new PC has a SSD? Or does my SSD have to be partitioned in a particular way?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
This has surely nothing to do with your drive. How do you want to connect: via Ethernet or WiFi? In the latter case: Have you entered the WPA2 password?
Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
Hi Cosmo,
I want to connect via Ethernet, no wifi involved. This has worked seamlessly in the past.
Thanks for your advice.

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
Can you provide the output to
Code: Select all
$ sudo inxi -Fnxx
Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
There should be a "z" at the end of that inxi command. Otherwise, the OP will be posting publicly the mac ID of his network devices.
So, inxi -Fnxxz.
The report will tell us several things, most importantly whether the ethernet device has a driver (which would come from the kernel).

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
pbear is right with his correction.
But there is an even better way: The system report provides the needed info; if you copy from there, the code tags are already included and we get a far better readable output.

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
New PC means different firmware/hardware but the same (old) kernel on that Linux Mint live USB, that's all. Depending on edition installed on that USB maybe you need to boot compatibility mode option on Live GRUB menu, solve problems with that ethernet card or create a new Live USB. That's why other users are asking about your system report or those codes result (see here).

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
Thank you all for your responses.
From the outset, I bought a new USB and downloaded the latest Linux Mint iso into it. The system installed on my SSD is Manjaro, but I am also a fan of Linux Mint and in the past, I would sometimes live boot from USB, as I said before.
Apologies for the format and lack of code tags. I could boot into Linux Mint and use the copy button at the bottom of the generated System Report but with no internet connection on USB, I could not upload it directly to this forum. I had to copy-paste on to another USB and then reboot into the other distro to access the forum.
The Cruzer Blade 29.25 GiB USB is the one with Linux Mint on it. I used SUSE Imagewriter to make it (first I tried with Mintstick and there was no connection, so I formatted and tried with another writer. On my previous PC, I used Etcher but I have read that Etcher is potentially unsafe with security and privacy concerns.)
I do notice that there is N/A for Ethernet driver in the live USB boot but e1000e for the SSD report. If someone can help me understand if this significant.
Incidentally, i have tested another distro (Linux LIte) live-booted through USB. I used a brand new USB and downloaded the latest version iso. The result was the same, successfully booted but no network.
I tried loading the iso onto Ventoy but could not boot at all. The error I received was "error: invalid magic number/error: you need to load kernel first.
Thank you all again for your advice.

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
The problem is that PC is too new for that 5.4 kernel (Device-1: Intel Ethernet I219-V vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: N/A). Notice Manjaro is installing 5.15 kernel (Device-1: Intel Ethernet I219-V vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: e1000e).
There is an special Linux Mint edition for such newer hardware and you can try creating a Live USB with cinnamon una edge edition ISO file (kernel 5.13).
Also you can try Ubuntu 22.04 (kernel 5.15) ISO or wait a couple of month as next LM 21 edition will be released with that 5.15 kernel.
I"m not sure you can solve this problem on that Linux Mint una XFCE Live USB and/or maybe you are not interested (most probably you are not if this is not a Live with persistence) but can use your cell phone internet connection by USB as indicated here in the meantime.newbieguy wrote: ⤴Sat Jun 25, 2022 9:14 am System Report for Live USB Linux MInt (no connection)

Re: Live USB won't connect to the internet
What Jo-con-El says.
And Ventoy supports Mint ISOs just fine, so probably a problem with your installation.
Read where? Probably nonsense, but no way to tell from a second hand paraphrase.

Re: <SOLVED>Live USB won't connect to the internet
Thank you to all who shared their expertise with me to solve my problem. By flashing an ISO with a kernel more suited to my newer PC (Cinnamon 20.2 Edge, as advised), I am now able to live boot with an Internet connection.
One last thing from a privacy and security point of view, is there anything in the system information I provided that should be redacted?
Thank you again.

Re: <SOLVED>Live USB won't connect to the internet
If you use inxi with the -z option, as pbear showed, you do not have a privacy concern. If you use the system report, as I told you, the z-option gets internally automatically used. And you would have automatically gotten the code tags, resulting in the better readable format; please consider this in the future.
Re: <SOLVED>Live USB won't connect to the internet
For example, if you look at the Manjaro inxi report, under the Network section, notice
full mac: <filter>
. This is one of the things the -z flag does. For comparison, run the command again without -z
and you'll see the actual mac address. Don't post this, obviously.
