Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
I'm trying to install Linux Mint on to my new computer but when I load up the OS from my USB stick the resolution of the screen is stuck on 1024 x 768. When I click on the display settings and try to change the resolution no other options appear. Is there a fix to this?

What you have described is usually an indication the graphics driver did not load. Is your hardware quite new? Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to Linux but what I want to do is have Mint as my main OS and run windows on a VM for certain programs/games. I had to get a pre-built mid spec gaming PC and that's the PC I'm trying to replace windows with mint on. But I don't really know if the hardware on my pc supports Mint or how certain hardware even works when it comes to running/interacting with Linux and the complications that come with it.

Hello, user.
The Graphics section in your System Information confirms what SMG suspected 2 days ago:
Reason:
Your machine is very new, from 2022. But the kernel, which you installed, K5.4.0-91, is older than your hardware. Chances are pretty good that a newer kernel series 5.15.0-xx will support your hardware much better.
Suggestion:
Launch the Update Manager. Go to View => Linux Kernel. Select the tab labelled "5.15.0". From the list of available 5.15.0-xx kernels select the most recent one at the top of the list. Click [Install].
Once the installation has completed successfully, close the Update Manager and reboot your machine.
Once the machine has rebooted, please, create a fresh System Information report and share it with us.
This should tell whether upgrading to the most recent kernel series has improved the situation.
Best regards,
Karl

The kernel does not load any kernel graphics driver module for your graphics card. The X server loads the low level fbdev driver, which does not support the graphical features, which a system needs today.Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:2504

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
I do not see the kernel series 5.15.0 anywhere in the update manager but I think it's because I do not have the latest version of cinnamon on my USB stick. I'm going to download the newest version and get back to you and let you know if I have the kernel series 5.15.0.
Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
You do have the latest version. Look into the menu of the update manager, you will see the command to open the kernel dialog.
Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
Yeah my bad, but I still do not see kernel series 5.15.0, the most recent kernel tab I see is 5.13 with kernel 5.13.0-22 being the most recent one in said tab. Should I just pick that kernel or do I need to use 5.15?
Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
Hello, user.
Sorry. This was my fault. In your initial post you had clearly told that you were still trying to install, hence still using the LM 20.3 live system.
But I had obviously ignored the "live system" aspect when recommending to upgrade to kernel series 5.15.0.
Trying to install any new kernel on the live system does not make any sense.

Instead:
- You may be better of getting the Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon Edge ISO and use that for your installation.
The "Edge" ISO will bring along something like kernel 5.11 or maybe 5.13.
Once the LM installation on your SSD has completed and the system booted from the installed LM 20.3 Cinnamon Edge, you will be able to upgrade to kernel series 5.15.0 using the Update Manager. - You could also install from the current LM 20.3 Cinnamon live system, acccepting the graphical issues for the moment.

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
As karlchen has indicated, your system has no graphics driver loaded which is why you can not change the resolution.
Your system is very new. You will need to use a newer kernel to get the correct drivers.
Additionally, your system has an Nvidia GPU. Last I checked, the LM20.3 ISO did NOT automatically install a graphics driver for Nvidia GPUs. After installing Linux Mint you will need to use Driver Manager to install a driver for your GPU (either the open-source xorg-nouveau driver or a proprietary Nvidia driver.) I am not sure at this point whether you will need to boot in recovery mode to install the driver or boot with

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
My bad I took a bit to reply but I've now installed the Cinnamon Edge ISO file and downloaded it on my computer with dual boot along side Windows 11. I have the newest kernel downloaded and unfortunately the issue I'm having with the resolution still hasn't been fixed. I've tried downloading the video drivers that Mint and you guys suggested me to download but I kept on getting a message that the package manager was busy downloading something else and it never finished "downloading" whatever it was "downloading" I got the same message when I tried to do the system updates. I've tried restarting my computer which didn't work out so then I tried turning off the computer with the power button and it didn't let me. It just brought me back to my login screen and asked me if I wanted to suspend my computer which it didn't even let me do because there was no button that let me click on through the prompt, same went with the power off prompt as well. So I reset my computer again and then when it booted up and I logged in, the start up jingle was very distorted and off pitch which scared the daylights out of me. I ended up hard powering off my computer by holding on to the power button. I'm probably just going to erase the Mint OS from my hard drive and try to install it again I guess. I have no idea what in the actual heck happened to my Linux Mint OS. I don't know if Mint has a problem installing along side Windows 11 or if I installed a fraudulent version of Linux Mint from the website (I didn't do the verification step if it was an official download with the Sha256 commands) or if my hardware isn't compatible with Mint. Any suggestions?

Without seeing the new system information, it is hard for use to guess what the issue is.user wrote: ⤴Mon Jul 04, 2022 2:23 am My bad I took a bit to reply but I've now installed the Cinnamon Edge ISO file and downloaded it on my computer with dual boot along side Windows 11. The drivers for Intel should load automatically from the kernel so you should not need to download drivers for that GPU. Installing Nvidia drivers can wait until after we make sure the Intel drivers are installed.
Here are instructions How to verify ISO images. Even if there is nothing wrong with the ISO, things can happen while you are downloading it that can cause problems. That is why it is a good idea to verify it.

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
I have an older core i5 pc and decided to use it as a dedicated Linux mint 22 pc. I was able to install, but I could not get full screen resolution. I assumed that the problem was a driver, but Mint said it was installed and offered no upgrades. I searched for the solution but I only saw much ado about xorg and such. The old windows that was on this pc had all the higher resolutions and I knew I should be possible. I fooled around with it for several days and decided to but a cheap video card and use it instead of the onboard intel graphics. I got a Radeon 5450 and installed it in the pc. I was still not able to get past 1024 x 768. (actually the only resolution offered). I decided to install Mint 20.3. Still, no full resolution. I was about to buy a new monitor when it occurred to me that I had been using DVI before and I switched to VGA when I set up this pc. I decided to switch back to DVI. Wow, mint changed to 1920 x 1080 right away.
The monitor doesn't support HDMI or Display port. Only VGA and DVI (I guess I'm showing my age, but it is a good working old Hanns G monitor I had for many years). I just wanted to share this solution.

Re: Resolution stuck at 1024 x 768
hey and welcome to the forum and linux mint astrobill the problem with users computer is that shes/he is using an iso that is for older harware, the computer she/hes using is newer so he/she needs to use a newer kernal. for your problem is that your Radeon 5450 is 10 years old and have had linux support for at least 9 years of that time.
user the edge version of linux mint comes with kernal 5.13 i suspect is still to old for your hardware. another go is to try the linux mint 21 witch was released about a month ago, it comes with kernal 5,15 hopefully it can solve your problem with the graphic driver..
