Login screen - password field only with mouse movement SOLVED

Post by XP-refugee »

Fresh install LM 20.3 xfce

Login screen only shows password field when mouse moved.
Contextual menus are unsuitable for some users.

How do I get a persistent password field?

Have tried the obvious "Login Window", "Desktop", "Desktop Settings", "Window Manager" & "Window Manager Tweaks".
But nothing I can see.

EDIT: Mods pls move this to a better section if it's in the wrong one.

Further research shows that AIUI LM 20.3 xfce uses lightdm
And lightdm uses Slick-Greeter
Slick-greeter has config file at /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d

But I can't see how to mod Slick-Greeter nor which of the other Greeters has a always visible password field.
Google image search shows all greeters with password field visible including what I take to be Slick-Greeter.

Anyone got info on accessible greeters?

Can you screenshot / photo what you are seeing - out of the box the default is for the password field to be always visible and selected.

Things that could affect this...

In Login Window app.
Hiding the User List (in which case you get a user field instead of a password field initially - but it should be focused and ready to type)

Your user being set for nopassword login - use groups command in the terminal to check. If this is the case you just hit enter to login (assuming single user).

Are we definitely talking about the login screen and not the lock screen (they look identical on mint XFCE)
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

Re: Login screen - password field only with mouse movement SOLVED - BUG?

Post by XP-refugee »

SOLUTION? (& BUG?)
I have an external monitor plugged into a laptop.
I have the laptop screen set to switched off and not being a mirror in "Display".

But when I open the laptop cover before logging in I see the laptop screen is active.

And the login password field is visible on the laptop screen.

When I move the mouse on the external display then the password field is transferred to to external monitor.

Open the Login Window app and go to the Settings tab. Is Monitor (in the top section) set to Auto or to your external monitor? It sounds to me like you would want that to be the external monitor.

Thanks SMG.
It was on auto.
Will try eDP when I get home.

EDIT: eDP was the other option to "auto" on my laptop with no external display.

On the laptop with external monitor the options were "VGA-1" and "auto".

Selecting VGA-1 has the password field constantly visible on the loginscreen.

eDP is your laptop screen. VGA-1 is your external monitor. I am guessing you only had the options of VGA-1 and auto when you had the external monitor attached because you had already turned off the laptop display.

If you leave that login window setting on VGA-1 and disconnect your external monitor, I am not sure what will happen. I do not know if the program goes back to the default of Auto or if it will show the login window on the non-attached monitor (and thus you will not be able to see it).
