Failed to boot from pen drive (ACPI Errors)

Post by ItShouldWorkTho »

Hello everyone,

I am new to Linux and tried to set up a dual boot with Windows 11. During the first startup these errors appeard shortly and then a black screen. I tried to boot from my other laptop and there it worked. I tried to disable secure boot and TPM but that did not help. I could boot with compatibility mode. I tried searching for the problem but it seems that for the others the startup works anyway and is just an annoyance. If needed, I will provide more information. Thanks for the help in advance.

Ignore the ACPI errors. The error that is relevant is the Device Descriptor Read Error. Are you using a usb hub? If so, plug directly to a usb port. If not using a hub, try in a different usb port. Your usb may be requiring more voltage than your usb ports can provide--try with a usb pen drive smaller than 16GB. Not all pen drives are created equal, try using a different one if you are using a smaller drive and it does boot on a different machine.

Thanks, but it still does not work. I tried a different pen drive as well and nothing seemed to change. I could boot into Mint once and then I installed it. After the restart there where, I think, similar error messages (I forgot to take pictures). And then again just a black screen. To get rid of the faulty installation I deleted the partition and grub in windows. When I tried to boot from the pen drive again, I ran into the same problems as before. Ubuntu seems to work for me tho. Could it be that my laptop and Linux Mint are not compatible somehow?

Not LM but kernel that came with that LM edition. You did not say LM and Ubuntu editions you are trying.

LM 20.X "regular" editions are featured with kernel 5.4 (GA Ubuntu 20.04 kernel they are based on). You will need to boot in compatibility mode, and install following instructions, but most probably you will need to solve problems on booting installed system and/or avoid system freezing and install a newer kernel (5.13/5.15) ASAP.

You can try Linux Mint Cinnamon una edge, but on next (maybe two) months Linux Mint 21 will be released and it is based on Ubuntu 22.04 so with same 5.15 kernel.

Thanks for the help but in the meantime I was searching for alternatives and found manjaro. I think I like that distro even more and it boots. I will give Linux Mint a try in the future again and your posts may help me then but for now I am set.

Be aware, Manjaro is a what's called a rolling distribution, which has advantages and disadvantages when compared with a stable release distribution like Ubuntu/Mint. Generally, Linux newbies do better with stable release, but it's your choice.

Rolling release, advantage = you get the latest bleeding edge stuff, disadvantage = bleeding edge updates can break your system (maybe). It's why I stick with mint.

While Manjaro is a rolling release, it does have an LTS kernel available, and it does test its updates to minimize the chance that something will get broken. Seems to be a stable distribution, in my experience. SUSE Tumbleweed is similar. My experience has been that if Mint doesn't work out-of-the-box, that it's easiest to just distro hop to see if another will, rather than mess around with something that may not be easily fixable. If you have a PC, Ventoy is a tool you should have--it's a real timesaver.

The OP doesn't see lower log level errors because Manjaro suppresses those acpi errors by default
