[SOLVED]After 1 week from installation linux mint cinnamon wont boot [SOLVED]

Post by soiRia »

Hi, this is my first time installing and using linux mint. I have an old laptop that i cannot afford to change, so i change to linux as a last resort. I was just starting to get used to using it o er the week, when it booted to a black screen with _ flashing. Beforehand it reported some hardware error?I tried using live usb to run boot repair as was recommended on some sites. I can open linux mint from usb, but otherwise i would like to avoid reinstalling the program as i already imported bookmarks and deleted their files elsewhere.

Code: Select all

 [0.147530] mce: [hardware error]: cpu 0: machine check : 0 bank 4 : a600000000020408
 [0.147543]mce: [hardware error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef61f40
 [0.147552] mce: [hardware error]: PROCESSOR 0:506c9 TIME 1656597354 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 48
[8.489622] EDAC pnd2: Failed to register device with error -22.
 -

This was flashed twice when booting in between black screen and blackscreen with_. And the second time it doesnt have the last line about registering.
Linux mint logo gets shown when sistem gets shut down, but when booting it shows asus logo.
Bios version 315
Intel(R) celeron(R) N 3350 @1.10GHz
Intel(R) HD graphics
Total memory: 2048mb
Boot priority: ubuntu (eMMC PO SanDisk DF4032)
I hope that i chose the correct forum and gave enought information so you could help me.

Hello soiRia welcome to the Forum.

Please do that, and from there, share your system info by entering the command inxi -Fxxxmprz into a Terminal and posting its output here.

I don't know enough to help, but it seems you are missing a driver:

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 500 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A

Someone else will know if that's related to the problem or not.

I could be wrong, but I think your main OS hard drive is not showing up in your live boot.
I think it should. Please start Disks and see if you can find your main OS hard drive and mount it.
If not, then shutdown and check cable connections.

I have started disk program and the main disk is not shown. It is named as a SD Card Reader DF4032 (I dont have sd card in). I have made screenshoot of the Disk and Files windows. I guess something went wrong as the laptop is around 4 years old. I am not sure what you meant by mounting the drive. If checking cable connections is like physicaly? I cannot do that.
I just remembered but before this problem started the system did some warning about starting to run out of space. I have not done any updates or adding apps, i have even deleted some apps. but it seems that somehow the usable space shrank?

I just remembered but before this problem started the system did some warning about starting to run out of space.
Your / partition on the SD card is only 31GB, this is not big enough to use mint sensibly, a full / partition = no boot.

Boot your install stick run disks again and click on partition 2 (mmcblk0p2).
Screenshot from 2022-07-01 16-37-08.png
Click on the "start button" to mount it, showing as a square box in the screenshot. It will tell you where it is mounted, click on the link, it should open up the file manager.

You need to delete some files, if you have used timeshift, delete /timeshift or its contents.

The long term solution is install mint to an SSD/HDD, or get a larger SD card. No system drive is showing, do you have one, because it is not showing in disks? If you have one, either it's broke or maybe the sata mode is set RAID.

You can upload screenshots to the forum, no need for a remote site (unless the image file is > 200kB), see the attachments tab below the reply window.

I will try your advice later. To answer your question. In time that i took the screenshot, i have had no sd card inserted. I suspect that that's the system drive. But it is incorrectly labelled? I don't know. When i started using mint previous week everything worked well. Is it possible that the system drive got corrupted?

If i need to reinstall mint is there any way to get browser bookmarks copied over as i have some school research sites imported, that i have no copies elsewhere?

Yes your system drive is the SD card, that is where mint is installed, no, it's not incorrectly labelled, and no it is unlikely that it is corrupted, it is full and that is the most likely cause of the problem.

You haven't said what your computer is and it is not shown with inxi fxxmprz, the normal inxi output we ask for is inxi -Fxxxrz. This identifies the computer, e.g.

Code: Select all

andy@T432 ~ $ inxi -Fxxxrz
System:
  Kernel: 5.4.0-121-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.4.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.2.7 wm: muffin 5.2.1 dm: LightDM 1.30.0

  serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 10 serial: <filter>

  UEFI [Legacy]: LENOVO v: G1ET99WW (2.59 ) date: 11/13/2013
This would identify the scope for fitting additional drives.

I'll add two suggestions.

1. Open Disks as you did before, only this time click on Partition 2. Disks will tell you how much space is being used.

2. Yes, you can export bookmarks from the browser. If using Firefox, go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks. This will open a dialog box called Library; select Import & Backup > Backup. This will produce something called a json file, which can be imported into any installation of Firefox (and most other browsers). Save the file on a USB flash drive. Alternatively, save the file to the live session, then email it to yourself before shutting down.

This is good advice given above. We'll get you back running again in no time. No need to check drive cables or anything else. There is no hardware corruption.

So your Vivo laptop comes with a 32GB eMMC flash card as main storage... ouch. Running Mint will be a pain. Linux Mint requires 20GB as minimum. Recommends 100 for ease of use. I have 26GB only in my root partition. You copy / move around a couple of large files n y provoke a storage bottleneck in no time. No surprise you were locked out of your system after a week. 2GB of memory is also kinda too low these days but that won't be any problem with normal use even on Cinnamon. XFCE would be more appropriate though if you insist on having Mint. But I have to be honest you got to look for a distro tailored to your machine specs. "Puppy" "Damn Small" etc were such distros back in the day. Others may come up with better suggestions.

Missed that, that will teach me to read posts from the top!

Alternative distro, yes but... there is a trade. Having had to play with a lightweight distribution today, antiX, I didn't find it very user friendly, particularly for a new linux user. Suspect the same is probably true for other lightweight distros.

soiRia you will have a much happier experience if you install mint to an external usb drive, either SSD or HDD. That will give you a lot more room to play with. You could even keep win on the eMMC.

I have found that it has made timeshift, which may have caused this whole situation. I am not sure how to delete that as the disk is locked? only in read mode? I have no idea how to do that? Should i use a recovery mode or something? The same with bookmarks as if booted from usb, i cannot see previous browser bookmarks in this mode.

Maybe I will really switch to xfce, as one of you recomended. Honestly I thought that mint was the lightest

Boot your mint install stick, open the file manager, you should see your / partition on the eMMC drive in the devices pane on the left - it will be something like xxGB volume. Click on it and either delete the /timeshift folder or delete its contents.

That will fix your immediate problem, the long term problem is that the drive is not big enough to run mint as your main OS, you will need to keep an eye on free space and be careful about what you install and what you save, e.g. GB size movies.

Timeshift - you should use it but... if you have an external usb drive or even a large capacity usb stick, put an ext4 partition on it (use gparted, install from software manager) and set that as your timeshift destination.

Cinnamon (LM19.3) uses 9GB of space with nothing extra installed, looked but could not find an equivalent number for xfce.

You can do this (install Mint in 30GB), but you must modify your behavior. You won't be able to install very much software over the base Cinnamon install, which is pretty complete as it is. You won't be able to install much in the way of flatpaks. You will not be able to use Timeshift in the default configuration. You will need to store your large files (Timeshift, music, videos, etc.) on an external disk. You will have to keep your installed (but unused) kernels cleaned out. I know it is possible, because that is basically what I do running Mint as a virtual machine.

A complete install (Xfce) for me, with the programs that I consider to be a 'must have', is roughly 16GB. If you pay careful attention, and you have external storage, you shouldn't have problems.

I finaly figured out how to delete files in timeshift (tried to use terminal but had not enought knowledge). I accidentaly discovered that i can use right clik- open as root, which enabled me to use delete. I could finally boot normaly and did do some copy of important files. While booting it still shows some errors, but they may be due to small free space. I will try to turn off timeshift and try to free up some more space by removing apps that are not needed. If there will be some problems in the future I will install lighter os. Or try to get my hand on slightly better laptop.
Thanks for all the help you have offered and all the instructions. :D
THANK YOU ALL!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) linux apps do not consume large amounts of disk space like win applications. You will find this a lot of work for little return. One area where you will see a benefit, if you have installed any flatpaks they use a lot of space, but you need to remove them all to get the space benefit. I don't use them, but my understanding is the first one you install pulls in a lot of additional stuff, subsequent ones only add what is necessary for that specific application. There are others on the forum better placed to offer advice in this area.

Should have told you that :(

To help monitor space, in a terminal, df tells you what is mounted and how much space:

You can see that my / partition, sdc1 is 51% used. GUI apps - disk usage analyzer will tell you what folders are using the most space, downside - it takes a long time to read the system to get the info. gparted (the standard linux partition editor - install from software manager), shows usage. This is my system drive:

Hey apart from the sd card witch have been said above i would also suggest add more ram RAM: total: 1.81 GiB used: 1017.1 MiB (54.9%). cinnamon needs about 4 ram for easy of use. could be something to add otherwise there is linux mint xfce that using less ram/cpu then cinnamon.
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 7900
Graphic Card: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX/7900M
Ram 32 GB ddr 5
Kernel: 6.5.0-14 generic
LM Cinnamon 21.3 edge

Good point. Alternatively, disabling Windows Effects (System Settings > Effects) will reduce Cinnamon's RAM use significantly. You'll be hard pressed to notice a difference in terms of how the system looks and everything of substance works fine without Effects.
