Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
It's a bit of a pity, that the Linux Mint Team doesn't comment on this
Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
It's a user forum. Mint developers hardly ever participate here.

You could write a comment in the blog.

Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
I'm not sure if it have been asked but is secure boot/fast boot disabled in bios? windows 11 needs secure boot to work as of now. I have not seen any video yet to run windows 11 without secure boot.

FYI, mikael, that's incorrect both ways. Mint works fine with secure boot, as it uses Ubuntu's boot loader shim (which is registered with Microsoft). Meanwhile, Win11 runs fine without secure boot. I'm doing it on two separate machines.
There are valid reasons to disable secure boot (that's why I have), but it's not the problem here.

Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
I made a mini guide on Sweclockers just a week after win11 release how you can install Win11 without TPM, SecureBoot, Bios Legacy install on MBR, and with local account on Home edition and that was on a old first gen intel i5 cpu.mikaelrask wrote: ⤴Thu Aug 04, 2022 1:53 pm I'm not sure if it have been asked but is secure boot/fast boot disabled in bios? windows 11 needs secure boot to work as of now. So it is possible.

Nothing is impossible, the impossible just takes a little longer to solve..
It is like it is.. because you do as you do.. if you hadn't done it as you did.. it wouldn't have become as it is. ;)

Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
Yaaay ! I got the LM 21 live ISO to boot
The problem was BIOS related for this gigabyte Z68XP-UD4 v1.0 motherboard.
I was using a bios from 2011. F3 specifically.
I have flashed the most recent bios that specifically called out UEFI support as a feature.
Now I’ll look at a fancy new install.
I will update this thread in the first post with my solution to save others some pain.
Thanks for all your help, support, ideas, suggestions. I’m proud to still be a Minty guy still after so many years.

Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL.
Excellent. Will be interesting to see whether it works on other computers of the same vintage.
People hate updating their firmware. Helps to have a concrete example where it worked.
Re: Can't install LM 21 from USB. BOOT FAIL. **SOLVED**
Firmware updates are a nerve wrecking process. Not as bad as they used to be though. These days even old boards often have auto verification built in and such.
It’s a bit of a pain when you don’t have windows to do the usb drive creation since the download is in exe format.
I used Unetbooin to create the freedos bootable usb and then copied the flash exe and the firmware file over.
Boot up
Select freedos with no drivers
Pop over to C:
DIR to see the files on the usb ( it’s possibly 15 years since I used that command lol. Think of the money I have saved by not using Windows. Software and hardware update purchases that just weren’t needed. )
Then I had to figure out that the file needed to be passed as an argument to the flash exe.
<FLASHEXE FIRMWARE.xxx >
Then it proceeded and the reboot worked.
Now I can use either uefi or bios centric boot.

I tried to install systemBack but its too old to run in a virtual install of LM21 SystemBack looks like a really cool tool as it lets you create a bootable and installable iso of your desktop. That's just cool in and of itself.
There is a fork that was updated 7 months ago. !! BluewhaleRobot I like the name. I'll give that a try and see.
If that works then what will it show? Possibly that I have too much time and I'm stubborn. apart from that it might show that the ISO image packaging tools used for LM21 are allergic to my system !. I'm not sure what else it can show.
I think this is what you want.

This is a great tool and I use it a lot at the company where I work. As the original project is no longer maintained by the creator, I decided to make some modifications and compile it natively for Mint.
I haven't tested it much yet, but it's working perfectly for my work scenario.
Feel free if you want to try it out.
