After rebooting, I can only login to a text prompt. Selecting *any* recovery mode, including the oldest one I have installed which is 5.4.0-122, and decrypting when prompted , I am logged in but only to a text-only terminal such as you would get during Ctrl-Alt+F2.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
takes me to a blue screen package configuration screen where I can choose between gdm or lightdm. Selecting either one just takes me right back to the same terminal prompt I came from. When I reboot, I am prompted to decrypt (it look like the normal gui-style prompt), but the Linux Mint logo just flashes and spins forever.
