Can't restart display manager after boot Linux Mint 20.3

Post by hefty_problems »

I'm using Linux Mint 20.3 on a Dell Precision 7760, and have been using it without issue for months now. I updated to the latest kernel available for Linux Mint 20.3 in the Update Manager, 5.14.0-1047oem, and a couple days later rebooted. I should mention the entire disk is encrypted using the disk encryption utility that Linux Mint offers during installaion.

After rebooting, I can only login to a text prompt. Selecting *any* recovery mode, including the oldest one I have installed which is 5.4.0-122, and decrypting when prompted , I am logged in but only to a text-only terminal such as you would get during Ctrl-Alt+F2.

Here are the details of my system that I got when I booted using a live session:

Trying 'startx' gives:

Code: Select all

xinit: connection to X server lost
waiting for X server to shut down (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
Trying to reconfigure lightdm with

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

takes me to a blue screen package configuration screen where I can choose between gdm or lightdm. Selecting either one just takes me right back to the same terminal prompt I came from. When I reboot, I am prompted to decrypt (it look like the normal gui-style prompt), but the Linux Mint logo just flashes and spins forever.
