(re-SOLVED) Linux Mint 21 GRUB edit question - don't know how to set up grub menu

Post by Kris345 »

Prob - after upgrade to 21, grub menu "Ubuntu" still points to old 4..122 kern for 20.3
How change to 5..15

-
EDIT: I changed this a lot as I found a deb and installed those files so now things run.
-
-

/etc/default/grub:

Code: Select all

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

GRUB_DEFAULT="saved"
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="hidden"
GRUB_TIMEOUT=6
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

grub menu looks like

this is an old picture - it now includes 46.

What is the difference between this topic and this other one of yours Linux Mint 21 kern 5.15.0-46.49 update fail - libcrypto.so.1.1 missing? They seem to be the same issue.

I do not know yet if it is the same.

A person provided a possible fix in the other thread but it did not yield the missing file.

Some people may be knowledgeable in GRUB problems and some may be knowledgeable in kern install probs.

I still do not have an answer.

46 now works.

I got ahold of a deb and ran it a couple times and was able to then boot to 46.

Still do not know how to change grub menu so latest is in the menu item called "ubuntu" <-----------------

Going through the links in the other topic, many people (and the submitted bug report) mention the problem relates to have left-over files from Grub Customizer. Did you ever have Grub Customizer installed?

THANKS BOTH!

Yes, grub-customizer was on 20.3 but .2 is not available on Richter's own site so I am unable to install it. Trust me, I tried hard!

But, yes, I fuly accept that it screwed things up...

However, since nothing is there now (just a bunch of icons), I cannot do the cp fix suggested
so don't know what to do to fix it. I COULD simply edit that thing in boot which we're not supposed to edit and make it what I want, for now, but that would not change it going forward and I would have to do that each time I add a kern.

Life could be worse: at present, the first item "ubuntu" is worthless but I use "saved" and it points to the first one in the advanced section, so boots correctly unaided, and other than the first boot after a kern is added, it runs automatically. I have "saved" in there because sometimes I want to do 2-3 boots in a row, like an update, to windows, so that makes it more hands off.

Or is there a way I can fix this - like by re-installing grub?

beating this some more, I searched for the old/bad one in /etc , and got:
Screenshot from 2022-08-10 13-28-24.png
suppose I were to delete those and then run sudo update-grub again?

Grub Customizer has apparently been removed from the community repos because of the problems. See this topic grub-customizer not found on 21.

I do not use Grub Customizer so all I can do is point you to the link I already provided in the prior post. Maybe others will be able to help you.

In the blog about upgrading the following link has been provided: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1168054 ... 0-to-19-04

Try if it helps you. If so, you are lucky, if not you belong to those users, who did not believe the warnings from some of our members.

I am not sure what you are saying. grub-customizer was apparently removed by the 20.3 to 21 upgrade process

Removing GC does not revert the changes, which this program applied. This strange behave is a design decision of its developer.

yes, I said I understand that, above. The question is how to change it?

edit: I can see all those incorrect proxies imbeded into /boot/grub/grub.cfg

The question is how to change that?
