during the install it removed google earth, and then at the end, it installed it again. Something about downgrading it. same with skype, though skype works fine for me.

I got the deb for that missing file set now I have to figure out what to do with it.

EDIT: HOWEVER, sudo update-grub now works. let me go reboot and check things...

For easiness of reading and save others from digging through Ask Ubuntu posts, here's the direct link to download the .deb file:

http://security.debian.org/debian-secur ... _amd64.deb

I seem to have the same issue when mint tried to update kernel 5.15.0-46 but I cannot install the libssl1.1 .deb file. I get a warning that a package must be removed and that package is kernel 5.15.0-41.44.

"apt" is stuck in a loop and I need to know how to fix it?

How are you trying to execute the deb file. I downloaded it to Downloads and simply click on it. It tells me it's already there, I ignore that, and click on "Reinstall Package" a time or 2. I thought I had restored an image to before attempting to update the kern but as soon as I did that, it recognized it and the kern appeared in grub.

Once downloaded, I click on the file and it automatically opens in Gdebi. It warns that that software needs to be removed: linux-image-5.15.0-41-generic=5.15.0-41.44. However, I am running on kernel 5.15.0-43 so it has an issue with an older kernel?

Out of the blue I've no idea why it wants the remove that kernel, but if you're running on another (even newer) one and you have no problems, I see no problem in letting Gdebi remove that one, it is somehow detecting some package integrity problem and finding out removing that older kernel is the best way to reclaim package integrity.

Just pay attention if any errors occur, specially GRUB ones, as this should fix it's ability to work.
Make sure your system is left in a position able to boot! So pay attention if any errors affect your running 5.15.0-43 kernel.

If you have no errors, just to make sure, run

Code: Select all

apt check
sudo update-grub
and you should get no errors. But before rebooting go to the Update Menu, and on the menu select View - Linux Kernels and check your installed and available versions there.

If everything seems fine from here you seem safe to reboot.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

It was not out of the blue that it wanted to remove that -41 kernel...it happened after it tried to upgrade to kernel 5.15.0-46.49. I had been running the newly upgraded mint 21 for a few days and received a notification to update the kernel to -46.49 and after that ... apt has been messed up.

I have no errors running the -43 kernel but I cannot upgrade using apt. It gives "too many errors" and fails to update packages.

I have tried sudo apt autoremove, sudo apt install -f ... all fail. "sudo apt install -f" tells me that kernel -41 must be removed but it cannot do it as per errors below:

Code: Select all

update-initramfs: Deleting /boot/initrd.img-5.15.0-41-generic
/etc/kernel/postrm.d/zz-update-grub:

run-parts: /etc/kernel/postrm.d/zz-update-grub exited with return code 127
dpkg: error processing package linux-image-5.15.0-41-generic (--remove):
installed linux-image-5.15.0-41-generic package post-removal script subprocess returned error exit status 1
dpkg: too many errors, stopping
Errors were encountered while processing:
 linux-image-5.15.0-41-generic
Processing was halted because there were too many errors.
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

That is the error loop I have in apt. I was hoping that I could install the libssl .deb file but gdebi gives errors too.

FWIW: I can reboot fine as it stays on kernel 5.15.0-43. My concern is fixing apt.

Have you tried installing libssl1.1_1.1.0l-1~deb9u6_amd64.deb like I've mentioned above? From here:
http://security.debian.org/debian-secur ... _amd64.deb

Above you state that you've tried to open a file with Gdebi, was this the one?

I don't know what Gdebi uses under the hood, if it is apt or dpkg.
The way I've managed to install it was by opening a terminal on the folder where you've downloaded the .deb file to and then run:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i libssl1.1_1.1.0l-1~deb9u6_amd64.deb
Let us know how this goes...

Thanks for the suggestion to try a different method. It still gives an error trying to install.

That error caught me completely stunned out of surprise!
Are you running Mint21?
I've tried it myself on Mint21 and got no errors. Just to make sure I've downloaded the file from the link I gave you above and installed it, again all fine. It IS a Debian installation file downloaded straight from the Debian's security repos.

So out of the blue all I can say is that you might be using some other OS rather than Mint 21 or you had the bad luck of a corrupt download. Apart from recommending you to download it and try again I feel so lost in the weeds now with that error... Anyone else yelp please?

I can confirm I am running mint 21... see pic below:
Selection_184.png
However, I cannot update as I get errors....

It is interesting that I can update initramfs and it does not show the troublesome -41 kernel?? Yet it will not boot into -46 on shutdown or restart. See pic below:

There's yet another way to install packages: dselect.

You can download it from the Ubuntu repo:
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... _amd64.deb

try to install it with dpkg:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i dselect_1.21.1ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
and cross fingers hoping it will install...

then try installing the missing libssl1 with dselect: (did you download it again, just in case you had a corrupt file?)

Code: Select all

sudo dselect install libssl1.1_1.1.0l-1~deb9u6_amd64.deb
Cross your fingers again... dselect uses dpkg, so you'll need a 3rd hand to cross fingers yet again. There is definitely something wrong with your system...
By the way, just asking... Is your Mint 21 a fresh install or was it an upgrade from 20.3?

Installing dselect worked fine but installing libssl1.1 gets caught because it wants to remove the -41 kernel...and try and install the -46 kernel. See pic below:
Selection_187-min.png
As I mentioned, this is mint21 using the upgrade tool from a fully updated mint 20.3 install. It has been and is still running fine. Just worried about my ability to upgrade packages.
