[Solved] Linux Mint 21 took 11.03 min to boot login page

Post by nahian-limon18 »

Hey guys! I am using Linux for over 2 years now. Linux Mint has been really smooth and fast and also stable as well that's why I love this OS btw it is my first Linux os. Before Linux mint would take boot to login page within 1minute now it is taking 11.03 min to login page and after entering password it is taking 2.49m to get to the desktop. And it is really slow. I mean literally whatever I press there is always a pop up says wait or force quit. After reinstalling or cleaning the whole disk and then installing Linux mint also tried many different solutions and still didn't come up with any solution. Please help me!!!!

inxi -Fxpmrz command output:

I would suspect old hardware on a kernel that is ultimately now too new for it plus potential HDD health issues beginning to manifest (repeated sda2 orphaned inode errors and file system journal recovery attempts). since sda2 is your root partition, that is not good at all

The mount points look okay, nothing else glaringly obvious jumps out

Consider LMDE5 instead of Mint 21, you will get the new Cinnamon toys after your first update of it now as they were released to elsie yesterday. The older kernel branch of 5.10 is more tolerant of legacy hardware
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Yeah, your right. Thanks for the reply and suggestion. Kernel 5.13 works fine for my hardware. I should stick with that.

no, it takes less time. I would say a standard time that would take any pc to load. I tried installing Ubuntu with same kernel and problem still occurs. So i will try linux mint 20.3 kernel 5.4 to see if its the kernel or not

do you dual boot with windows? i have same issues many times and believe it's because the EFI/BOOT is too small. you can barely fit one kernel and if you use the default ubuntu kernel like 5.15 it comes with extra modules. just as mine, your efi/boot is 104MB.
or you could have something pluged in like hdmi or usb in conflict which you can unplug for testing.

on a side note i would limit the swap to maybe 8GB or even less if you don't do video editing. usually linux wants the same amount of swap as current ram, but i've gotten away with using even 2GB since i don't hibernate.

if you have a chance try any other distro maybe an arch like manjaro only to test boot time

Yeah, I use dual boot with windows. Tried fedora and again got the slow boot, freeze issue, etc. You may be right let me increase the EFI partition size

The kernel should never be stored on the EFI partition. the EFI partition should be mounted as /boot/efi only and not /boot. Then there's no issue with a 100MB EFI partition as the kernel gets stored on root in the folder /boot.

I have 3 kernels installed and EFI contents is still only 8MB in total out of the 100MB available even if shared with Windows it would not fill up that way

Not anymore using linux mint 21. Current kernel works perfectly fine and fast for my device

(Solved.) :D

While testing my PC over and over again. I saw it can't access to my SATA properly so basically:
  • I reset my BIOS settings
  • Extended my EFI partition 100mb to 150mb that's all and did nothing.
  • Do not use Rufus to make bootable flash OS image if your getting US keyboard Freezinh Issue while installing Linux Mint [My recommendation: Etcher]

I went from potato pc to
i am fast af boiiiii....
thank you all community for support, recommendation, suggestion & advice.

Suspect you chose the wrong settings with rufus:

EFI partition 100MB or 150MB will make no difference, from memory grub needs about 30MB and you can comfortably fit grub and the win bootloader in 100MB.

nahian-limon18 Happy to read you were able to resolve the problem...I'd like to add a few things if I may for future reference..

-=- I realize i'm late to the game on this one...but some food for thought, and yes I've tested this on a fresh clean install of Mint 19 through 21..as well as with
all my programs and other things installed and working as they should-

1. Networkd-dispatcher.service isn't needed unless you're a system admin for multiple network systems .... Ditch it..

Gui uses network-manger (and it has it's own dispatcher) anyway.

Type each of the following terminal commands..pressing enter after each ... to knock that part out of the equation to speed up booting process up

sudo apt-get remove networkd-dispatcher
sudo systemctl stop systemd-networkd.service
sudo systemctl disable systemd-networkd.service

2. ModemManager.service is not needed as it's only real purpose is dealing with over the air internet..not local wifi aka wireless from either your own home wireless router or any public wifi..

That is a desktop gigabyte motherboard you're running and it's a safe bet you DON'T connect to the internet using an over the air internet ( aka DATA internet such as using a mobile device like a cell phone). Ditch it

Just like with the above terminal commands...enter one command at a time -v

systemctl disable ModemManager.service
systemctl stop ModemManager.service

3.
+ 57.784s (kernel)
This makes me wonder how many kernels were installed and dealt with. Open Update Manager, select View, then Linux Kernels. I recommend just sticking to one kernel active that you knew up a fresh clean installation-situation was running things ok, and the newest 5.4 as a backup..Only two total needed. Remove the rest

Cheers to ya and all those who dove in here and continue to help others. I always recommend this domain for Linux noobs and intermediate users alike. ( raises a toast)

Thanks for adding this thing hope people would get benefit from it. I tried this command from askubuntu but didn't work. But still maybe someone might get solution from it. And yeah by default i disable some services which isn't necessary for fast boot.

Yeah total it will took highest 76mb or something like this. I used to dual boot linux, fedora & windows but problem was linux can't properly accessing my sata and i didn't know that my brain went crazy for that time. And I am using rufus from a very long time but recently i got stuck in US keyboard option when installing mint. For that reason I used Etcher.
